About the Team:
The Dairy Research and Innovation Centre conducts a wide range of activity to develop, implement and promote sustainable breeding and management systems for dairy cows. The work was based at Crichton Royal Farm, Dumfries for almost 50 years and has recently relocated to new and extended facilities at Barony campus (also near Dumfries) alongside new office and laboratory facilities in the Dairy Nexus development. You will work closely with a collaborative and highly skilled team of data scientists, including a full-time Reader, a part-time Reader, and a full-time Research Fellow. The team leads a range of agritech and data-driven projects at Barony dairy farm and across commercial farms in the DDC region.
The Opportunity:
This is an exciting opportunity to join SRUC at the forefront of digital innovation in agriculture, contributing to the development of cutting-edge digital twin technologies within the Digital Dairy Chain project. As a Software Engineer, you will play a key role in advancing the { farm-twin } platform, helping to design and deliver reliable, secure, and scalable software solutions that support real-world research across dairy farms in South-West Scotland and Cumbria. Working within a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment, you will partner closely with experienced data scientists to translate complex research challenges into impactful technical solutions. The role offers a unique blend of hands-on development and operational responsibility, from enhancing the core codebase and integrating data connectors to deploying and maintaining the platform on SRUC infrastructure. You will contribute to an evolving open-source ecosystem that directly supports innovation in sustainable agriculture and decision-making on commercial farms. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about developing technology with real-world impact and is eager to be part of a forward-thinking organisation driving change in the rural sector.
Minimum Qualifications and experience:
