Overview
In this role you will lead environmental governance and compliance within SGN, shaping EMS practices and driving continuous improvement across sites. You will work with cross-functional teams to ensure regulatory compliance and support the Environmental Action Plan. You’ll influence environmental performance, incident investigations, and permit-related activities, contributing to SGN’s net-zero agenda. This is a pivotal role for advancing safe, sustainable energy delivery.

Responsibilities
- Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and standards
- Provide environmental guidance supporting legal compliance and the Compliance & Assurance programme
- Manage the Environmental Management System (EMS) per ISO 14001, including audits and improvements
- Monitor environmental performance against targets, conduct site inspections and audits
- Review and develop environmental procedures and EMS documentation
- Lead waste management activities and carry out duty of care audits
- Support permit applications including discharge consents, trade effluent notices, and PPC permits
- Investigate environmental incidents to identify root causes and drive improvements
- Develop and share environmental communications and guidance across the business
- Support delivery of the Environmental Action Plan (EAP)
Key requirements
- Qualification in an environmental discipline (e.g. diploma or degree) or relevant professional experience
- Experience in environmental, compliance, governance, auditing, or management systems roles
- Knowledge of EMS and ISO 14001 requirements
- Understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory compliance principles
- Knowledge of safety management systems, investigations, auditing, and document control (beneficial)
- Ability to analyse information, prepare reports, and collaborate with operational teams
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills across all levels
- Ability to manage priorities and work independently
- Professional memberships/certifications such as IEMA/ISEP or NEBOSH General Certificate desirable but not essential
