We have an exciting opportunity for a Gas Quality & Metering Engineer to join our Network Asset E&I team. This is a specialist role responsible for ensuring SGN’s compliance of gas quality and metering systems with the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations (GSMR), the Uniform Network Code (UNC), and the Gas (Calculation of Thermal Energy) Regulations.
You will provide technical expertise for our Transmission Network (7BarG) supporting our large volume fiscal metering and gas quality monitoring equipment, ensuring accurate reporting to Ofgem. You will also manage technical faults and support the asset lifecycle of gas quality and metering systems, supporting SGN’s growing portfolio of Offtakes, Biomethane Facilities, and Gas Entry Points.
Here’s how you will contribute…
- Managing fiscal metering systems, ensuring accuracy, reconciliation, and error reporting.
- Providing specialist input on gas quality monitoring, including gas chromatography and analyser systems.
- Delivering Ofgem compliance reporting for Offtakes, Biomethane sites, and entry points across Southern and Scotland networks.
- Leading technical fault investigations and supporting timely resolution.
- Supporting the development and delivery of SGN’s Gas Analyser Condition Monitoring Service.
- Contributing to new entry point projects, including biomethane and hydrogen, aligned with SGN’s Net Zero strategy.
- Championing internal and external working groups leading to meaningful changes in the gas industry.
What you will need
You will be self-motivated, organised, and proactive, with excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach.
Essential:
- HNC (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Instrumentation, Process Control, or related discipline.
- Strong technical knowledge of fiscal flow metering systems, flow measurement technologies, calibration, and error reconciliation.
- Experience with gas quality monitoring, including gas chromatography and associated analytical systems.
- Familiarity with GSMR, UNC and Ofgem compliance requirements.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate and resolve complex technical issues.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
Desirable:
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status or working towards it.
- Knowledge of industry settlement processes and billing systems.
- Understanding of calibration and measurement uncertainty calculations.
