Join our team as a Finance Officer and play a key role in supporting the work of a small, values-driven education charity.

We’re looking for an experienced, self-motivated and organised individual seeking a part-time role that offers flexibility, responsibility and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work with schools and teachers across Scotland. This part-time role supports the day-to-day running of the finance function, helping to ensure our work with schools and teachers can continue and grow.

Key responsibilities

  • Finance management and reporting
  • Responsible for all daily financial activities for Scotdec.
  • Prepare quarterly cashflow forecast and present at board meetings
  • Lead the year-end accounts process, which involves liaison with independent examiners - present accounts at AGM
  • Bookkeeping and operations
  • Carry out bookkeeping, liaise with payroll and process monthly pension payments to 3rd party.
  • Manage bank reconciliations and financial records
  • Ensure timely processing of payments and income
  • Create and manage project budgets as required
  • Compliance and governance
  • Maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal requirements including OSCR and Companies House returns
  • Other
  • Support staff with admin tasks such as room bookings, event sign-ups etc
  • Participate in weekly online team meetings and other meetings as required

Essential skills and experience

  • Excellent IT skills including good working knowledge of, and experience in, MS Excel and PPT
  • Experience in a finance, accounting and bookkeeping role
  • Proactive and self-motivated with strong organisational skills
  • Strong attention to detail and internal control capability
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proactive approach
  • Ability to communicate well with outside stakeholders (e.g. project partners and auditors)
  • Capable of working under pressure and as part of a small but enthusiastic team
  • Excellent organisational skills, ability to prioritise, and work independently
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of Scotdec, especially in terms of sustainability and social justice

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience either in charity / third sector accounting
  • Professional qualification or working toward accreditation (e.g. AAT, ACCA, CIMA)
