Location: Edinburgh or London, with some international travel
Salary: £129,132.00 with excellent benefits

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is the trade association representing the Scotch Whisky industry, Scotland’s largest food and drink export and one of its most iconic global products. We work with governments, international organisations, and industry stakeholders to secure fair market access, promote responsible regulation, and protect Scotch Whisky worldwide.

The Role

We are seeking an exceptional leader to head our International team. Reporting to the Chief Executive, the International Director will shape and deliver SWA’s international agenda, securing trade wins, tackling barriers to growth, and representing Scotch Whisky at the highest political and commercial levels.

This is a strategic, outward-facing leadership role requiring outstanding judgement, influence, and credibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to the International team, ensuring delivery of market access and trade priorities.
  • Represent Scotch Whisky in UK and overseas governments, at Ministerial and senior official level.
  • Lead SWA’s engagement in FTA negotiations and major trade policy developments.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with member companies and international stakeholders.
  • Develop and inspire a high-performing International team.

About You

You will bring:

  • Significant senior-level experience in international trade, government, or related institutions.
  • The ability to influence effectively at Ministerial and executive level.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills.
  • Political and commercial acumen, with excellent communication and representational skills.
  • A strong track record of delivery in complex, high-profile environments.
  • Candidates must have the right to work in the UK, the Scotch Whisky Association is unable to provide sponsorship for this role.
