We are looking to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to work on production projects. The role will form part of a new team with responsibility for technical aspects of the build that fall outside the production engineering (PE) team remit. The team will typically be involved with resolution of mechanical, electrical and electronic issues. The role will be hands-on with the mechanical aspects of daily production, resolving issues and working with the PE and development teams amending and implementing design changes to improve production and product reliability. The role will also have a project element, with involvement in specialist, one-off designs and builds.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development and delivery of solutions to manufacturing and assembly issues as they occur.
  • Work on development of JIG’s, fixtures and assembly techniques and demonstrate cost savings in the build.
  • Design and delivery of innovative design solutions for electro-mechanical assemblies and instruments.
  • Participation in specialist project activity and custom builds.
  • Skilled in identifying simple but effective solutions which lead to strong design for manufacture.
  • Used to working under pressure, meeting all deadlines including design and budget expectations.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and cost reduction projects, and assisting the Production and assembly team.
  • Ensure that all H&SE policies and the company ISO guidelines are adhered to during manufacture/assembly/repair of instruments.

Key Skills:

  • Proven experience in a Mechanical Design / Mechanical Engineer position.
  • A clear demonstration of the design of automated electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Demonstration of overall product design experience, from ergonomics through to workshop assembly and build/test instructions.
  • Strong CAD / 3D Modelling skills, ideally based around SolidWorks.
  • Experience in at least two of the following technologies is essential:
  • Solid state and miniaturized heating/cooling technologies/peltier elements
  • Optical measurement technologies, including infra-red sensing
  • Precision temperature control systems
  • Position control systems
  • Enclosure/Case design
