The Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for Life & Health (L&H) Americas is a senior leader responsible for the strategic oversight and execution of the risk management framework across the Americas L&H business. This role ensures that risks are effectively identified, assessed, monitored, and managed in alignment with Group and local risk appetites and regulatory expectations. The CRO is a trusted advisor to senior leadership, a key contributor to business strategy, and a visible leader within the global risk community.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Risk Leadership
    • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous enhancement of the risk management system, including risk appetite frameworks, governance policies, and risk reporting protocols.
    • Provide proactive and credible challenge to business initiatives and transactions, with a particular focus on risk identification and mitigation.
    • Represent L&H Americas Risk at senior leadership forums, ensuring risk considerations are fully integrated into business planning and execution.
  • Executive Stakeholder Engagement
    • Build and maintain strong, influential relationships with senior stakeholders across the L&H business, Group Risk, and other corporate functions.
    • Act as a trusted advisor and thought leader on complex risk matters, serving as a strategic partner, promoting best practices and independently identifying risk considerations in complex technical issues.
    • Actively contribute to Group-wide risk initiatives and ensure alignment with global risk standards and expectations.
  • Risk Oversight & Governance
    • Oversee the identification, measurement, monitoring, and management of all material risks, including strategic, underwriting, reserving, ALM, investment, liquidity, operational, and emerging risks.
    • Ensure the effectiveness of risk mitigation strategies, including reinsurance and capital management tools.
    • Lead the design and delivery of ORSAs and Recovery Plans, ensuring regulatory compliance and strategic relevance.
    • Support the activities of SCOR's Group Risk Management function, providing timely and effective input for L&H and Group Risk Dashboards, and L&H papers for key Group Committees.
  • Model Risk & Capital Adequacy
    • Ensure the Internal Model accurately reflects the risk profile of the business and supports both regulatory capital requirements and strategic decision-making.
    • Oversee the development and implementation of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) and stress testing frameworks to monitor risk exposures and inform management actions.
  • Regulatory & Internal Control Compliance
    • Ensure full compliance with local and Group regulatory requirements, including ORSA and MAR (Delaware).
    • Collaborate with process owners to ensure comprehensive, efficient, and effective control documentation and testing.
  • Committee Leadership & Escalation
    • Chair or facilitate the SGL US and SGL Canada Risk Committees, ensuring effective governance and timely escalation of material risk issues to Group Risk and executive leadership.
  • Project & Change Management
    • Lead or sponsor complex, cross-functional risk-related projects and change initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives, timely delivery, and effective stakeholder engagement.
    • Apply structured project management methodologies to drive execution, monitor progress, manage risks, and ensure sustainable outcomes.
  • Team Leadership & Talent Development
    • Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing risk team across the Americas, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
    • Ensure robust succession planning and capability development to support long-term organizational resilience.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Risk Management, Finance, or Economics.
    • Qualified actuary (e.g. FSA designation).
  • Professional Experience:
    • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in the life (re)insurance or financial services industry, with at least 5 years in a senior risk leadership role.
    • Demonstrated experience in enterprise risk management, including regulatory frameworks (US RBC, Solvency II, Canadian LICAT).
    • Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams and managing complex, multi-jurisdictional risk environments.
    • Experience working in a global organization, with strong exposure to both business and corporate functions.
  • Technical & Functional Expertise:
    • Deep understanding of life and health insurance/reinsurance products, risk drivers, and capital implications.
    • Strong command of quantitative risk modeling, internal model validation, and capital adequacy frameworks.
    • Expertise in governance, compliance, and regulatory engagement across North American jurisdictions.
    • Familiarity with project and change management methodologies and experience leading strategic initiatives.
  • Leadership & Interpersonal Skills:
    • Strategic thinker with the ability to influence executive stakeholders and shape business decisions through a risk lens.
    • Strong leadership presence with a track record of developing high-performing teams and fostering a culture of accountability and innovation.
    • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex risk concepts into actionable insights for diverse audiences.

Relocation assistance within the U.S. is available for this position. Candidates must have valid authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for employer sponsorship now or in the future.

Hybrid Work Policy: SCOR is committed to an "in office" culture where people can collaborate, exchange ideas, and establish stronger working relationships while still providing flexibility. SCOR employees work 3 days per week in an office with the flexibility to work 2 days per week remotely.

Pay Range for roles performed in NC: $220,000-$300,000 base salary per year. Actual salaries may vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, role and performance. The range listed is just one component of SCOR's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives. In addition, we provide a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, a retirement saving plan, paid holidays and paid time off.
