The Role
As an Underwriter within the Fine Art & Specie team in London, you will be responsible for underwriting and managing a portfolio of high value, specialist risks. The role sits at the intersection of technical underwriting, portfolio management and broker engagement, with a strong emphasis on quality, discipline and collaboration.
You will work closely with colleagues across London and the wider global Fine Art & Specie network, as well as with Claims, Operations and other specialty lines, to ensure consistent underwriting standards and effective portfolio oversight.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite and manage a combined Fine Art & Specie portfolio, including high value art and collections, precious metals, bullion, cash in transit, vault risks and jeweller’s block.
- Apply specialist technical underwriting judgement across valuation, provenance, security arrangements, storage, transit methodologies, aggregation and catastrophe exposure.
- Assess and manage correlated and accumulative exposures, including shared storage locations, transit routes, geopolitical risk, theft, fraud and man made loss scenarios.
- Underwrite, price and negotiate risks submitted via Lloyd’s box, e trading platforms and other underwriting channels, in line with agreed appetite and authority.
- Manage the existing portfolio, including renewals, endorsements, claims involvement, and client or risk discussions as required.
- Work closely with the Claims function to support effective claims handling and feedback into underwriting.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of SCOR’s Fine Art & Specie underwriting approach, including portfolio balance, appetite refinement and bespoke solutions.
- Collaborate with SCOR’s global Fine Art & Specie network, underwriting risks across borders and territories and ensuring consistency of underwriting standards and discipline.
- Generate, interpret and manage underwriting data and reports, providing accurate insight to support day to day underwriting, portfolio monitoring and management reporting.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with brokers and clients, attending meetings and market interactions as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory, licensing and internal governance requirements.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following experience & competencies:
- Proven track record as an Underwriter in the Lloyd’s market or an equivalent international market.
- Significant experience underwriting Fine Art & Specie risks.
- Demonstrated expertise in risk selection, pricing and bespoke wording negotiation.
- Established broker and client relationships.
- Experience underwriting international and cross border portfolios.
- Acumen of reinsurance and insurance principals.
Core Competencies
- Strong technical underwriting capability, supported by a sound understanding of legal, risk management and market considerations.
- Good operational competence across underwriting and placement systems, including XUBER, Power BI, Placing Hub, PPL and Whitespace.
- Ability to work confidently with underwriting data, MI and reports to support trading and portfolio oversight.
- Clear and effective communicator, comfortable engaging with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders.
- Sound judgement, accountability and the ability to make balanced decisions under pressure.
- Organised, proactive and able to manage competing priorities.
- Team oriented, with a willingness to support and develop colleagues.
- Willingness to travel internationally when required.
- Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in one or more additional languages is desirable and considered an asset.
Required Education
- Degree educated or equivalent professional experience.
- ACII qualified, or demonstrable progress toward completion (or commitment to complete).
