Research Scientist – Implantable Biosensing Systems in Sutton Courtenay

Sutton Courtenay Full-Time On-site
S

We are seeking a Research Scientist with a strong background in the R&D of biosensing, implantable or in-vivo medical device technologies to contribute to the development of a next-generation, fully implantable technology platform for continuous biomarker monitoring within the uterus.

The technology is being developed to provide new insights into uterine health through continuous biomarker monitoring, enabling the investigation of patterns and changes within the uterine environment that have historically been difficult to study. Beyond its initial sensing capabilities, the platform has the potential to incorporate additional sensing technologies and, in the longer term, therapeutic delivery systems, opening up new possibilities for the investigation and management of uterine health conditions.

Working across the complete device system, you will investigate, model and prototype new technologies spanning mechanical systems, materials, electronics, energy and communications, solving complex multidisciplinary challenges that will shape future generations of the platform.

This opportunity would suit a scientifically rigorous and practically minded researcher who enjoys solving complex problems from first principles. Combining theoretical modelling and simulation with hands‑on experimentation and characterisation, you will develop proof‑of‑concept technologies, investigate their performance within challenging biological environments and contribute to the development of new intellectual property.

The Company

We are an innovative healthcare technology company developing a novel implantable biosensing platform for the study and monitoring of uterine health.

Our technology brings together advanced biosensing, materials science, mechanical engineering, electronics and human physiology to enable continuous monitoring of biomarkers within the uterine environment. By generating longitudinal biological data, the technology has the potential to reveal patterns and relationships that cannot be identified through conventional single-point measurements, advancing our understanding of uterine health and associated medical conditions.

The platform has been designed with adaptability in mind, offering the potential to integrate new sensing capabilities and explore future therapeutic applications, including targeted drug delivery.

We operate within a highly collaborative R&D environment where scientists and engineers work across traditional discipline boundaries to solve complex system‑level challenges. Research activities range from fundamental scientific investigation and theoretical modelling through to experimental validation, prototype development and technology evaluation.

The Role

As Research Scientist, you will contribute to the investigation and development of novel device and system technologies for implantable biosensing applications.

Working across multiple technical disciplines, you will combine analytical modelling, simulation, experimental research and hands‑on laboratory development to investigate new concepts, understand system behaviour and evaluate the feasibility and performance of emerging technologies.

Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Modelling and simulation of materials, mechanical behaviour and system-level device features
  • Development of mechanical components, PCB-based systems, fixtures and experimental test rigs
  • Experimental design, system verification testing and performance characterisation
  • Scientific programming and data analysis using tools such as Python
  • Investigation of technical challenges associated with miniaturised implantable systems operating within biological environments
  • Interpretation and presentation of evidence-based research findings
  • Production of scientific reports and technical documentation
  • Supporting invention disclosures and intellectual property generation
  • Development of proof‑of‑concept research prototypes
  • Contributing to multidisciplinary research activities spanning engineering, materials, electronicsand biological systems

The successful candidate will be expected to apply strong scientific rigour, demonstrate structured problem-solving capability and contribute original technical thinking within a multidisciplinary research environment.

Knowledge & Experience

To be considered for this role, you will likely have:

  • A PhD, or equivalent industry experience, in Engineering, Physical Sciences or a related technical discipline
  • Experience contributing to complex or multidisciplinary research projects
  • A track record of scientific contribution through publications, patents or technical project work
  • Familiarity with firmware scripting or scientific programming tools such as Python
  • Demonstrable knowledge of finite element modelling, tools and techniques
  • Experience designing and conducting robust experimental investigationsExperience analysing data and drawing evidence-based conclusions

Technical Experience

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

  • Materials science and material behaviour
  • Mechanical systems
  • PCB development or electronics integration
  • Verification or validation testing
  • Encapsulation technologies
  • Working with biological fluids
  • Physiology

Skills & Approach

  • A naturally curious and research-driven mindset
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with an ability to approach complex challenges from first principles
  • Strong experimental design and laboratory practice capability
  • Creativity and technical originality, with an interest in solving challenging multidisciplinary problems
  • The ability to organise and prioritise your own work effectively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary technical team

Additional Experience (Desirable)

  • Experience working within fast‑paced R&D environments, start‑ups or research spinouts
  • Familiarity with implantable or active medical device technologies

The Opportunity

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of an emerging implantable medical technology platform with the potential to advance our understanding of uterine health and the conditions affecting it.

For a researcher who enjoys combining fundamental scientific investigation with practical engineering, the position offers considerable technical breadth and intellectual challenge, with opportunities to investigate new sensing capabilities, explore future platform technologies and contribute to the development of novel medical applications.
