We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist with a background in electrochemical biosensors and/or electrochemistry to join a highly specialised R&D team developing next-generation implantable biosensing technology. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced research scientist with expertise in electrochemical sensing systems, sensor characterisation, and experimental electrochemistry to play a key role within an innovative deep-tech healthcare company developing implantable monitoring technology.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will lead investigations into the modelling, performance, and suitability of electrochemical sensing technologies within complex biological environments. The role offers significant scientific depth, technical autonomy, and the opportunity to influence the development of emerging healthcare technologies with meaningful long-term impact.

The company is an innovative healthcare technology company developing novel sensing platforms designed to generate continuous biological insight in an area of medicine that remains poorly understood. Their work combines advanced engineering, electrochemical sensing technologies, materials science, embedded systems, and human physiology. This is a highly collaborative R&D environment where scientists and engineers work across traditional discipline boundaries to investigate complex system-level challenges.

The successful candidate will work within a technically strong team with substantial autonomy, contributing directly to research direction, experimental development, and core sensor evaluation activities. This opportunity would suit someone motivated not only by technical excellence but by the opportunity to become part of an ambitious and intellectually driven organisation at an important stage in its growth.

As a Senior Research Scientist, you will lead technical investigations into electrochemical sensing technologies for implantable monitoring systems, combining theoretical modelling, experimental research, and practical laboratory investigation to evaluate sensor performance within biologically relevant environments. Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Experimental characterisation and evaluation of electrochemical sensing technologies
  • Investigation, modelling, and experimental evaluation of transducers, reference electrodes, and measurement circuitry
  • Design and delivery of experimental test rigs and laboratory set-ups
  • Modelling and simulation of sensor transducers and associated circuitry
  • Experimental design, verification testing, and performance characterisation
  • Scientific programming and data analysis using tools such as Matlab and Python
  • Interpretation and presentation of evidence-based research findings
  • Generation of technical reports, invention disclosures, and intellectual property
  • Supplier engagement and procurement of research prototypes and components
  • Supporting and mentoring junior researchers within the team

The successful candidate will be expected to approach problems from first principles, work with a high degree of autonomy, and contribute to technically challenging research activities spanning sensor science, electrochemistry, electronics, modelling, and biological systems.

To be considered for this role, you will likely have:

Knowledge & Experience
  • A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline
  • At least 5 years’ experience within practical research or advanced R&D environments
  • A strong track record of scientific contribution, evidenced through publications, patents, or technology development
  • Demonstrable experience translating research into applied or commercially relevant technologies
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of electrochemical biosensors and electrochemistry
  • Experience with electronic simulation and modelling software such as SPICE, Altium, or Verilog-A
  • Experience designing and conducting robust experimental investigations and laboratory-based research
  • Experience analysing complex datasets and drawing evidence-based conclusions
Technical Experience

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Electrochemical sensing systems
  • Electrochemical sensor characterisation
  • Electroanalytical methods
  • Sensor transducers and measurement circuitry
  • Reference electrode systems
  • Implantable device technologies
  • Electronics miniaturisation
  • Biocompatible materials
  • Encapsulation technologies
  • Working with biological fluids
  • Physiology
  • Wireless data systems
  • Development and commercialisation of active implantable medical devices
Skills & Approach
  • A naturally curious and research-driven mindset
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with an ability to approach complex challenges from first principles
  • Creativity and technical originality, with an interest in developing innovative solutions and generating intellectual property
  • The ability to work independently with a high degree of autonomy and ownership
  • Strong experimental design and laboratory practice capability
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills
  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior researchers or engineers
Additional Experience (Desirable)
  • Experience working within fast-paced, multidisciplinary small companies or R&D environments
  • Experience contributing within highly collaborative multidisciplinary technical teams

This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging problems within a scientifically rigorous and highly collaborative environment. For the right individual, it provides substantial scope to influence research direction, contribute to novel sensing technology development, and play a meaningful role in the evolution of an emerging healthcare platform.
