This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced research scientist with a strong background in biomedical systems development to play a key role within an innovative deep-tech healthcare company developing novel implantable biosensing technology.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute directly to research activities spanning early-stage investigation, experimental validation, and prototype development. The role offers significant technical breadth, scientific depth, and the opportunity to help shape emerging technologies with meaningful long-term potential in healthcare.
The Company: Our client is an innovative healthcare technology company developing novel sensing platforms designed to generate continuous biological insight in an area of medicine that remains poorly understood. Their work combines advanced engineering, sensing technologies, materials science, embedded systems, and human physiology.
This is a highly collaborative R&D environment where scientists and engineers work across traditional discipline boundaries to investigate complex system-level challenges. The successful candidate will work within a technically strong team with substantial autonomy, contributing directly to research direction, experimental development, and core system design.
This opportunity would suit someone motivated not only by technical excellence, but by the opportunity to become part of an ambitious and intellectually driven organisation at an important stage in its growth.
The Role: As a Senior Research Scientist, you will lead technical investigations into novel device and system concepts, combining theoretical modelling, experimental research, and hands-on prototype development to evaluate future technology capabilities.
Responsibilities are likely to include:
- Modelling and simulation of complex system behaviour
- Development of PCB-based systems, research prototypes, fixtures, and test rigs
- Investigation of novel communications, mechanical, materials, and system technologies
- Experimental design, verification testing, and performance characterisation
- Scientific programming and data analysis using tools such as Python
- Interpretation and presentation of evidence-based research findings
- Generation of technical reports, invention disclosures, and intellectual property
- Supporting and mentoring junior researchers within the team
The successful candidate will be expected to approach problems from first principles, work with a high degree of autonomy, and contribute to technically challenging research activities spanning multiple engineering and scientific disciplines.
To be considered for the role of Senior Research Scientist (Systems) you will likely have:
Knowledge & Experience:- A PhD in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or a related technical discipline
- At least 5 years’ experience within practical research or advanced R&D environments
- A strong track record of scientific contribution, evidenced through high-quality publications, patents, or technology development
- Demonstrable experience translating research into applied or commercially relevant technologies
- Experience writing firmware scripts using tools such as Python
- Demonstrable experience in finite element modelling, tools, and techniques
- Experience designing, building, and experimentally validating research prototypes and test systems
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Implantable device technologies
- Electronics miniaturisation
- Biocompatible materials
- Encapsulation technologies
- Working with biological fluids
- Physiology
- Wireless data systems
- Development and commercialisation of active implantable medical devices
- A naturally curious and research-driven mindset
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with an ability to approach complex challenges from first principles
- Creativity and technical originality, with an interest in developing innovative solutions and generating intellectual property
- The ability to work independently with a high degree of autonomy and ownership
- Strong experimental design and data interpretation skills
- Excellent communication and technical documentation capability
- Experience mentoring or supervising junior researchers or engineers
- Experience working within fast-paced, multidisciplinary small companies or R&D environments
- Experience contributing within highly collaborative multidisciplinary technical teams
The Opportunity: This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging problems within a scientifically rigorous and highly collaborative environment.
