About us

The Science Museum Group is here to inspire futures. We aim to grow visitor\’s \’science capital\’ and engagement with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The Gallery Services department provides technical support services across the National Railway Museum, maintaining a diverse array of interactive exhibits, displays and elements of the museum supporting the visitor experience such as audio-visual displays, lighting, signage, and the general maintenance of our galleries. This skilled technical team supports the museum in delivering an ambitious programme of activities ensuring a high-quality visitor experience.

About the role

We are looking for a Gallery Technician to join our team and contribute to installation, opening, and ongoing maintenance of the National Railway Museum including, Great Hall, Station Hall, Mini-Rail, VR Experience and Wonderlab.

You will join a team of 3 like-minded technicians and your primary responsibilities will be the maintenance, repair and support of all the National Railway Museum\’s Galleries and displays and presentations.

We offer 7 days opening to our visitors all year round and you will be required to work regular weekends. Please note that this position requires frequent physical activity such as moving equipment, standing for long periods, and manual handling. We provide training and support to ensure tasks are carried out safely.

The shifts are mainly 08:00-16:00 and 09:00-17:00, but you will also be required to sometimes come in earlier depending on certain projects. Evening work will be required from time-to-time to support Museum events, major out-of-hours jobs or peaks in demand, such as gallery installations.

About you
We\’re keen to see applications from candidates who bring practical experience in a relevant technical discipline, whether that\’s through workshop skills, experience in a museum setting, or equivalent skills gained elsewhere. You\’ll thrive in this role if you enjoy working methodically and strategically, can plan your own workload to meet tight deadlines, and take real pride in the detail and quality of your work.

We\’re especially interested in people who have a genuine interest in practical skills such as electronics, electrics, or carpentry – and while not essential, experience in areas like coding, 3D modelling, or 3D printing would also be valuable. A good level of ICT literacy across Windows and Mac systems is important, as is the ability to read technical drawings, keep accurate records, and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical people.

Most tasks will require you to work independently, but you\’ll also need to be effective at collaborating with others and capable of adjusting to project needs and assisting when necessary. Above all, we\’re looking for someone who\’s highly dexterous, physically active, health-and-safety aware, and ready to help bring our exhibitions and spaces to life all year round.

Don\’t feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn\’t match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
