Electrical Compliance Technician

Salary: £32,773 to £35,049 per annum (depending on experience)

As a member of STFCs Estates Services, you will proactively support the Estates remit to deliver flexible, customer focused and efficient services that support the delivery of STFCs vision, values and objectives.

The Estates Services team needs to be agile and able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our diverse customer base. It is therefore expected that the post holder will demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach.

All members of the Estates team will, from time to time, be expected to lead or participate (appropriate to Band level) in STFC and Estates projects that may be outside their normal remit.

Primarily the role is required to carry out planned and reactive statutory maintenance duties, to sustain and improve electrical systems and services to support STFCs world-class scientific programme.

The role is responsible for undertaking the efficient and effective day-to-day execution of compliance maintenance activities relating to both the Electrical and occasionally Mechanical services/assets at three STFC sites RAL, Chilbolton Observatory and The Coseners House Hotel. The role reports to the Maintenance Compliance Manager, undertaking maintenance to ensure the provision of safe and reliable services across the STFC estate, ensuring they meet or exceed relevant industry standards and comply with STFCs safety codes. Standards are maintained through an ongoing proactive programme of maintenance regimes (planned preventative/reactive/condition based) that the post holder is responsible for the continuous development and execution of (managed through a CAFM software package). The post also includes an active role in the installation of new/replacement of mechanical and electrical services and systems across the estate.

Role Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned routine emergency light testing to all relevant buildings
  • Conduct planned water heater/kettle maintenance and any follow on works
  • Carry out Fire Alarm Isolations for both STFC Estates Services and their nominated contractors
  • Assist the Estates Compliance Supervisor and the Estates Helpdesk to maintain accurate and up to date compliance test records
  • Occasionally, carry out Legionella control based planned maintenance activities (temperature readings, flushing etc.)
  • Assist in water quality auditing of potable and closed heating/cooling systems
  • Assess Risk Assessments and Method Statements (produced for in-house staff)
  • Safe systems of work (permits/isolation procedures/hot works/ testing and re-commissioning)
  • Ensure that works are completed to a high standard and in a timely fashion, to reduce their impact upon scientific programmes.
  • Ability to be included on call during silent hours (one week in five, as part of a planned rotation)
  • Mentoring and development of team members (including the support of Apprentices and trainees formal programmes of learning).

Essential shortlisting criteria

  • A relevant qualification in a Electrical services discipline to NVQ Level 2/3.
  • Emergency Lighting Fundamentals Training NICEIC.
  • Safe isolation training NICEIC.
  • A relevant qualification in health and safety.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of working within an electrical/building services role.
  • Ability to diagnose faults and to resolve electrical issues associated with emergency lighting or general electrical services.
  • Proven experience in carrying out electrical services related maintenance activities and any associated remedial work.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety legislation.
  • Basic knowledge of CAFM systems.
