The Senior Laboratory Technician will support the Chief Technician in the Thermal‑Hydraulics Laboratory within the Nuclear Futures Institute (NFI). The role involves maintaining safety, security and operation of laboratory facilities, providing technical expertise, and supporting research projects and visitors from UKRN and UKNNL.
Responsibilities
- Support the Chief Technician in the maintenance, safety, security and operation of thermal‑hydraulics facilities.
- Actively engage in the building of equipment designed by the research team.
- Conduct basic scientific measurements using research equipment and methods.
- Set up experimental equipment (e.g., pressure, temperature, cameras) and assist in calibration.
- Provide training and support to facility users, including visiting researchers such as UKNNL staff.
- Assist in scheduling maintenance, organising consumables and ensuring safe working conditions.
- Manufacture components (e.g., test sections for THOR) and support manufacturing of experimental components.
- Engage with UKNNL technical staff to share learning and experience.
- Assist in the development of methods related to ongoing projects.
- Liaise with other project team members and attend laboratory management meetings.
- Support the performance review and developmental activities of the team.

Qualifications / Training (Essential)
- 2 AS Levels or 1 A level or NVQ Level 4 in a relevant subject area
- Level 5 IVQ Advanced Technician Diploma
Qualifications / Training (Desirable)
- An undergraduate degree (BSc/BEng) or equivalent in engineering, physical sciences or a related subject.
- A relevant technical or laboratory safety qualification.
- Valid Mobile Vertical (3a) licence.
Experience / Knowledge (Essential)
- Knowledge of process control equipment (valves, pumps, data acquisition equipment, flow and temperature measurement equipment).
- Experience with sensing equipment (temperature, pressure), rotating equipment (centrifugal pumps), and high‑temperature or high‑pressure equipment.
- Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory or process plant environment.
- Ability to write standard operating procedures and risk assessments.
- Capability to follow problem‑solving directions in a laboratory and calibrate machinery.
Experience / Knowledge (Desirable)
- Knowledge of thermo‑fluid dynamics.
- Experience working in a process facility.
- Competence in specific software use (e.g., LabVIEW).
- Experience preparing COSHH assessments.
Skills / Abilities (Essential)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills within a laboratory environment.
- Ensure safety standards are maintained within laboratory spaces.
