Applications are invited for a full-time, permanent Assistant REF Officer working in the Research Office at Bangor University. The postholder will contribute to the administration and operational functions involved with the university’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) preparation and its Annual Research Review.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the REF Manager in preparing for Bangor’s REF submission:
  • Provide administrative support for university-wide REF activities and liaise with senior research leaders and the broader research community.
  • Compile key data returns and consultation exercises for REF, keeping research outcomes and activity data current.
  • Maintain and adapt internal monitoring processes to meet REF criteria and guidance changes.
  • Offer clear advice on REF criteria and guidelines to staff at all levels.
  • Support monthly REF Group meetings and manage the budget for external assessment of outputs and impact case studies.
  • Assist in the quarterly research report and the Annual Research Review:
    • Adapt internal processes for monitoring research activity to ensure accurate data for the Annual Review.
    • Coordinate with professional services to gather required research information.
    • Produce reports and analysis for the Annual Review.
  • Manage repository (PURE), research data, and impact work:
    • Develop, maintain, and promote effective use of PURE for all research outputs.
    • Oversee validation, cleaning, and uploading of research data and student theses into PURE.
    • Ensure high levels of open access compliance and support transformative publishing agreements.
    • Facilitate interoperability between PURE and external systems such as Researchfish, ORCID, and Jisc Publications Router.
  • Maintain knowledge of sector developments in REF, research data management, open access, responsible metrics, and research systems.
  • Develop understanding of university research groups and themes.
  • Lead independent projects related to REF development, PURE system improvements, and the Annual Review.
  • Support monitoring of Research Centres and Institutes activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Finance, Digital & Library Services to ensure seamless research support processes.
  • Provide administrative support for other research-related committees as required.
  • Other Duties

    • Participate in performance reviews and developmental activities.

    Qualifications & Training

    • Essential: 2 AS Levels or 1 A Level or NVQ Level 4 in a relevant subject area (or equivalent relevant experience).
    • Desirable: Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area.

    Experience & Knowledge

    • Essential: Awareness of current Higher Education issues, policy, and funding environment as they relate to research and impact.
    • Experience in administrative roles in Higher Education or equivalent organisations.
    • Experience delivering customer and/or support service.
    • Desirable: Experience in a research support role within Higher Education.
    • Experience in REF, research data, or research systems roles.
    • Experience collating and analysing qualitative and quantitative data.

    Skills & Abilities

    • Essential: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build proactive relationships with staff and stakeholders.
    • Excellent organisational skills, including prioritising work and meeting deadlines.
    • Attention to detail and adherence to precise requirements.
    • Team-playing ability.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong numerical and IT skills (Microsoft Office).
    • Desirable: Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.

    Employment Details

    • Grade 6 – Salary £30,805 to £37,174 per annum.
    • Permanent, full-time position based on campus at Bangor, with flexible remote working options within the UK.
