The Tower Hamlets Schools Library Services is recruiting for a Peripatetic Primary School Librarian to join our team. This is an opportunity to be part of a long-running programme providing professional librarians to primary schools, ensuring that their libraries are strategically managed and developed as well as being open and available to children. The post is initially for maternity cover (Until January 2027) with opportunities to continue beyond this period.

In this exciting, varied and challenging role, you will:

  • Be managing up to 8 primary school libraries in Tower Hamlets on a part-time basis (number of schools to be discussed).
  • Support children’s learning by:
  • Promoting enjoyment of, and excitement about, reading.
  • Planning and running exciting library-based activities.
  • Establishing skills for independent learning.
  • Monitoring reading and attainment.
  • Support the teaching staff by:
    • Identifying and buying quality resources for the school library and classroom libraries.
    • Assisting in the delivery of information skills and information literacy teaching in the school.
    • Helping to select resources from the Schools Library Services.
  • Support the school by:
    • Working closely with school leaders to ensure that the library meets the needs of the school.
    • Managing and promoting the school library and teacher resources, ensuring consistency and maintaining quality.
    • Ensuring value for money when buying new resources.
    • Raising reading and literacy standards.

    If you are passionate about school libraries, children's books and promoting reading for pleasure, are committed to keeping libraries at the heart of the school and children’s education, and bring previous experience of being a school librarian, teacher or similar role, we would love to hear from you.

    We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

    • A passion for school libraries and children's books.
    • Experience of working as a librarian or appropriate similar experience of working/teaching in schools.
    • A strong vision of how to ensure a primary school library contributes to raising standards in schools.
    • Creativity and the ability to deliver activities for children as well as carrying out essential library tasks, including use of Library Management Systems, cataloguing and classification.
    • Strong communication and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively in a diverse community.
