Software Development Manager

About the Role

As a hands‑off coding manager, you’ll coach, mentor, and empower engineers while ensuring timely delivery and a healthy team culture.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and develop engineers, promoting skill and career growth
  • Collaborate with Heads of Role to ensure guidance and mentorship
  • Contribute to architecture and technical planning
  • Drive delivery – clear blockers, enforce process, ensure project outcomes
  • Align work with business goals in partnership with Product Managers
  • Create a positive, inclusive culture rooted in autonomy, psychological safety, and accountability
  • Monitor performance, delivery health, and morale, stepping in where needed
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and development initiatives for the team
  • Advocate for engineers across the organization
  • Maintain a healthy delivery cadence with frequent, quality ship (daily or weekly)

Qualifications

  • 4+ years software development, 2+ years managing or leading engineers
  • Track record of guiding teams through the full SDLC
  • Strong communication – clear, concise, human
  • Leadership with context without micro‑managing, building trust and autonomy
  • Confidence in architectural conversations and strategic thinking
  • Calm under pressure, pragmatic
  • Passion for great tech; bonus for open‑source enthusiasm
  • Strong understanding of business context and product impact

Nice to Have

  • Understanding of cloud hosting, specifically Azure
  • Knowledge of benefits & pitfalls of service‑based architecture
  • Background in SaaS, fintech, or insurance
