A refreshing new healthcare career in an island community. We have an exciting opportunity for a GMC Specialist Registered Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to join the group.
About the Medical Specialist Group: We are a partnership of currently 56 Consultants, which, under contract, provides specialist medical services to the Guernsey Health Service with a health care model that is different and separate from the NHS. As well as providing contract care, the MSG consultants also provide private care, which is remunerated separately, but is carried out in both MSG and PEH facilities as there are no other private facilities on the island. MSG administration and secretarial staff also support a consultant private practice. Tertiary care services are supplied by hospitals on the UK Mainland, mainly Southampton University Hospital, usually through contracted services. The Princess Elizabeth Hospital is a modern hospital with approximately 145 beds and strong clinical links to UK mainland centres, particularly Southampton General Hospital and Kings College Hospital.
Our vision is to be internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for clinical care and loved by the Guernsey community. Our purpose is to use our expertise and compassion to provide outstanding patientâcentred services that improve the health of the community we serve.
A better workâlife balance: If youâre searching for a dose of sea air or a better workâlife balance, our island community has it all. Renowned for its sandy beaches and mild climate, Guernsey offers an idyllic, family friendly lifestyle with excellent connections to the UK, France, and beautiful nearby islands. Our flexible working patterns and short journey times give you more time to enjoy life, whether thatâs a paddleboard and beach BBQ with the family after work, an afternoon hiking the cliffs or catching up with friends at one of our many awardâwinning restaurants. Our consultants and their families have also benefited from the excellent schools and the wide variety of activities on offer on the island.
About the role: We are looking to appoint a consultant orthopaedic surgeon to join our three existing orthopaedic surgeons to provide high quality comprehensive consultant only secondary care to the local community in the Bailiwick of Guernsey (65,000 people approx.). This is a fullâtime replacement post, and the successful candidate should be confident in managing general orthopaedic trauma out of hours and have a subâspecialist interest in shoulder surgery to complement the department. We are looking for a candidate who demonstrates clinical excellence, is a good communicator and shares the values we place on long term partnerships. There is a 1 in 4 onâcall commitment for trauma. The department performs approximately 250 trauma operations each year including about 60 neck of femur fractures. Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion at the time of interview. Those interested in a job share or flexible working arrangements are encouraged to apply.
Benefits: In addition to the appealing lifestyle that Guernsey offers, we have an attractive benefits package which includes:
- Generous salary (not utilising NHS pay scale) and current local Guernsey income tax flat rate of 20%
- Opportunity to undertake private practice (with additional remuneration)
- Generous relocation package
- Private health insurance for yourself and your family
- Pension scheme delivered by a longâestablished local pension specialist (up to 5% matched employer contribution)
