Scarborough Medical Group has an exciting opportunity for an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly motivated Healthcare Assistant to join our well-established GP practice. We are a committed and friendly, mixed clinical and allied healthcare team including pharmacists, first contact physios and mental health practitioners. We enjoy full GP and nursing team support including advanced clinical practitioners, nurse practitioners, specialist practice nurses and healthcare assistants. The patient support team and clerical teams work hard to support our Clinical teams and patients. We are part of a strong, collaborative Primary Care Network and enjoy good working relationships with colleagues in the other Practices as a result.
Main duties of the job:
- Hours: 16-27 hours per week (Monday - Friday). Permanent.
- Working under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and in line with established practice protocols and guidelines, the HCA will play a key role in assisting with the delivery of personalised care to our patient population.
- This is a hands-on role within a supportive, multi-disciplinary team, where you'll be involved in a wide range of clinical and health-promotion activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist clinicians in providing treatment, preventative care, and long-term condition management.
- Support health promotion initiatives and patient education.
- Work within your scope of practice to support the care needs of our entitled patients.
- Provide occasional support to the administrative team as required.
Requirements:
- Completion of the Care Certificate or an equivalent recognised qualification.

We are a successful and highly regarded GP training practice based in the beautiful coastal town of Scarborough on the North Yorkshire Coast. With a patient list size of 16,500 patients, Scarborough Medical Group operates from two surgeries to the North and South of the town. We are a highly supportive training practice with a long-standing team including GPs, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, HCAs and many more additional roles.
Job responsibilities:
- New patient health checks
- Timed annual patient checks
- ECG recording
- Chaperoning duties
- Assisting during minor surgery procedures including the GPSI in dermatology procedures
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses
- Sterilising (if required), cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment
- Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
- Assistance with surgical equipment re-stocking and stock rotation
- Assisting with the clearing and re-stocking of consulting rooms
- Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
- Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients' health and well-being
- Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
- Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being
- Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need
- Provide clinical support to registered nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation
- Deliver basic clinical care interventions under supervision, supporting continuity of care and patient safety initiatives
- Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
- Work within national and local protocols where these exist
- Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
- Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
- Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
- Support the administrative team on an as-required basis
- Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
- Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance
- Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
- Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
- Other tasks and procedures commensurate to grade and level but always seeking clarity and advice from senior staff
- Provide cover for sickness and holiday absence of colleagues on the same rota
Person Specification:
- Understanding of the principles of ECGs
- Able to perform venepuncture
- Wound care/removal of sutures and staples
- Ability to undertake patient medicals, including height, weight, BP, pulse and BMI etc.
- Ability to work within own scope of practice and understanding when to refer to colleagues
- Clinical IT system user skills and the ability to record accurate clinical notes
- Understanding of safeguarding adults and children
- Understand the requirement for PSDs and associated policy
- Broad knowledge of clinical governance
- Chaperone procedure
- Ability to undertake vaccinations
Qualifications:
- Has completed the Care Certificate or equivalent qualification
- There may need to be proof of any courses or training qualifications commensurate with the post
Experience:
- Experience of working with the general public
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting
- Understanding of infection prevention and control measures
- Has worked in a primary care environment
