Our client, a leading Tier 1 infrastructure and engineering contractor, is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to join their growing team in Workington. This is a senior leadership opportunity within a highly regulated environment, supporting major infrastructure and nuclear‑sector projects across both work‑winning and project delivery functions.
The successful candidate will lead engineering assurance, design management, technical governance and engineering delivery across complex projects, while helping shape future engineering capability within the business.
The Role
- Leading management of the engineering function within the sector/region
- Managing engineering assurance across design, construction, commissioning and handover
- Acting as CDM Principal Designer and ensuring statutory compliance
- Supporting feasibility studies, option selection and hazard/risk reduction activities
- Ensuring health, safety, quality, environmental and welfare considerations are embedded into all design decisions
- Driving innovation, alternative engineering solutions and value engineering opportunities
- Providing technical support to bids, tenders and client submissions
- Leading and developing Design Managers and wider engineering teams
- Ensuring engineering processes align with client requirements, latest standards and best practice
- Promoting continuous improvement, lessons learned and engineering excellence across projects
- Supporting recruitment, mentoring and professional development of engineers across all levels
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, consultants and external stakeholders
- Supporting collaborative delivery models aligned with Project 13 principles where applicable
- Deputising for the Project Manager when required
Candidate Requirements
- Degree qualification in a relevant infrastructure engineering discipline
- Incorporated Engineer status (or equivalent recognised professional accreditation)
- Significant experience within a Tier 1 or Tier 2 contractor environment
- Strong background in design management, engineering governance and project delivery
- Experience within highly regulated sectors such as nuclear, infrastructure or major projects
- Strong understanding of CDM Principal Designer duties
- Knowledge of NEC contracts and construction delivery processes
- Familiarity with client engineering procedures, gated project processes and stakeholder approvals
- Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills
Desirable Experience
- Sellafield or nuclear sector project experience
- Knowledge of nuclear site licence conditions
- Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams across complex infrastructure projects
