About the Opportunity

Our client are a growing engineering services business delivering major projects across the regulated water sector. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Senior Process Engineer to join their expanding team and play a key role in the delivery of complex water and wastewater treatment projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer who enjoys taking ownership of process design activities, mentoring junior engineers, and working closely with clients and multidisciplinary project teams to develop innovative and efficient engineering solutions.

The Role

As a Senior Process Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality process engineering design solutions that meet safety, regulatory, operational and client requirements throughout the project lifecycle. You will contribute to the successful delivery of water and wastewater treatment projects by undertaking process design activities, preparing technical documentation, and supporting project teams through design reviews, risk assessments and commissioning phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver process engineering design packages in accordance with project requirements, safety standards and quality procedures.
  • Identify and develop efficient technical solutions through scope reviews, site visits and stakeholder engagement.
  • Produce and review process design documentation including:
    • Mass balances
    • Process sizing calculations
    • Hydraulic calculations
    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
    • Control philosophies
    • Commissioning strategies
    • Technical reports and specifications
  • Prepare and contribute to design risk assessments.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant industry regulations, technical standards, professional guidelines and water company requirements.
  • Manage and record design changes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support project planning by estimating engineering hours and resource requirements for design packages.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to junior engineers, designers and graduates.
  • Participate in and present designs at HAZOP, ALM, KM and other technical review meetings.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years' process engineering design experience within the regulated water industry.
  • Strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes and treatment plant design.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering process design solutions for wastewater projects.
  • Degree, HND, or equivalent technical qualification, or significant experience gained from technician level.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills with experience performing process calculations and developing engineering documentation.
  • Good IT skills and proficiency with engineering and office software packages.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards chartership).
  • Experience across both clean water and wastewater treatment projects.
  • Previous involvement in HAZOP studies, ideally with experience acting as a HAZOP Chair.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
