We're recruiting a Senior Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Designer to join a leading engineering solutions provider working across various water sector frameworks. You'll produce high-quality EC&I design deliverables on water infrastructure projects, working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams and reporting to project lead engineers.
This is hands-on technical design work for someone with substantial EC&I experience in water or similar infrastructure sectors. You'll be responsible for producing design deliverables to a high standard, checking work in accordance with company procedures, and liaising with other disciplines to ensure integration and compliance.
What You'll Be Doing
- EC&I Design & Deliverables
- Produce high-quality EC&I design deliverables including Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), cable schedules, material take-offs, Block Control Diagrams (BCDs), schematics, equipment and cable routing layouts.
- Develop Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and system architecture diagrams.
- Produce designs that are safe, practical, economic and compliant with company procedures and UK standards.
- Check drawings in accordance with company procedures, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance.
- Technical Coordination
- Liaise with other engineering disciplines to ensure integration and coordination.
- Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Contribute to design reviews and technical discussions.
- Maintain safety and risk management at the forefront of all work.
- Standards & Compliance
- Ensure all designs comply with UK legislation and relevant standards for water sector infrastructure.
- Maintain professional competence and working practices.
- Follow company design procedures and quality standards.
- Support delivery of designs within project timescales and budgets.
About You
- Essential Qualifications & Experience
- ONC / OND / HNC / HND or equivalent engineering qualification.
- Minimum 10+ years' engineering experience in water sector.
- Proficient in CAD software for producing technical drawings.
- Good knowledge of design working practices and installation requirements for EC&I systems.
- Understanding of UK legislation and standards relevant to electrical and control systems in water infrastructure.
- Strong communication skills - confident engaging with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
- Safety and risk management focused - you approach work with safety and risk at the forefront.
- Customer focused - understand the importance of delivering to client requirements.
- Highly motivated - self-directed and committed to delivering quality work.
- Attention to detail - accuracy matters in technical design and documentation.

- Experience on water treatment, water supply or wastewater infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of water sector specific standards and design practices.
- Experience with BIM coordination.

The Role in Practice
You'll be based in Manchester with hybrid flexibility (2-3 days in office, typically Tuesday-Thursday, remaining days remote). You'll work as part of project teams supporting various water sector frameworks, reporting to project lead engineers. This is technical design work where you'll be responsible for producing accurate, compliant drawings and specifications. You'll work collaboratively across disciplines, ensuring EC&I systems integrate properly with civil, mechanical and process elements. Your experience and judgment will be valued - this isn't junior CAD work, it's professional design delivery.
