The Design Manager will manage design and engineering activities, ensuring deliverables are completed in line with agreed scope, programme, and budget. The role ensures that health, safety, environmental, and quality considerations are embedded throughout all design stages, with clear communication to construction and operational teams.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and manage all design and engineering processes across projects
- Ensure delivery of design outputs on time and within budget
- Develop and manage the design deliverables schedule
- Oversee design reviews, stage gates, and risk reduction processes
- Provide technical support to project teams
- Ensure compliance with project procedures and engineering standards
- Manage design queries (TQ/RFI/NCR) and ensure timely resolution
- Coordinate design planning with construction programmes
- Act as primary point of contact for client design representatives
- Produce regular design progress and project reports
- Ensure quality assurance and document control compliance
- Chair design and interface meetings with internal and external stakeholders
- Review designs for contractual compliance and approval requirements
- Manage external designers, suppliers, and subcontractors
- Oversee BIM and digital delivery requirements
- Manage design change processes and associated risks
- Support commercial management of design activities
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in civil engineering or similar projects
- Experience in both design and construction environments
- Strong understanding of construction methods and outputs
- Knowledge of engineering processes, standards, and compliance requirements
- Competent in Microsoft Office and industry software
- Professional accreditation (e.g. Incorporated Engineer or equivalent)
- Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
- Knowledge of project delivery frameworks and industry initiatives
- Experience with digital tools such as Power BI
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Commercial and contractual awareness
