With 50 years of experience of working with Self Builders designing and building high quality bespoke timber frame homes, Scandia Hus is long established in the Self Build market focussing on efficient and sustainable construction.

The Role

We are recruiting an experienced Design Manager with a proven background in the custom build sector. The role will lead our in-house design team, ensuring all projects are delivered accurately, on time, and to the highest technical and quality standards. The Design Manager will be responsible for managing the design process from concept through to manufacture, liaising closely with Project Managers, Designers, Technicians, and Engineers. The role is a Full-time office-based position from head office in East Grinstead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a small team of Designers and Technicians.
  • Oversee and be responsible for the production of drawings from concept and planning drawings, Building Control drawings to Technical Construction drawings for custom residential homes and small-scale developments.
  • Manage workload of the Design team to ensure deadlines are met whilst maintaining quality and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with project managers and at times engage directly with clients to understand their vision and translate it into thoughtful, buildable designs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including our manufacturing and construction departments.
  • Review and approve technical drawings, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide support and direction to the Design team ensuring professional development.
  • Responsible for the administration of drawing storage and filing for issue to clients, planning and construction.

Qualifications

  • RIBA and other architectural qualifications.
  • Proficient in use of AutoCAD.
  • Good understanding/experience of using Sketchup, Enscape & Photoshop.

Experience

  • Proven track record of managing a team of Designers.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating both creative and technical capabilities.
  • Understanding of UK planning and building regulations.
  • Understanding of Structural design principles and Timber Frame.
  • Experience of CDM Requirements and responsibilities.
  • Strong organisational experience managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Use of AI and digital tools in architectural workflows.
  • Understanding of sustainable design and energy-efficient construction practices.
