Purpose of the Role
To support the shopping centre’s environmental operations by managing all waste and recycling activities during evening hours. The role ensures waste streams are handled safely, efficiently, and in line with compliance standards, maintaining a clean and well-organised service yard and back-of-house environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Waste & Recycling Operations
- Carry out scheduled waste collections from retailers and back-of-house areas.
- Correctly segregate waste across all streams: General waste, Cardboard, Mixed recycling, Food waste, WEEE, Hazardous waste.
- Operate compactors, balers, and waste equipment safely and according to training.
- Break down cardboard and prepare recyclable materials for uplift.
- Keep the service yard, waste compound, and loading bays clean, tidy, and hazard-free.
- Monitor contamination and report incorrect waste disposal or misuse of waste areas.
- Support retailers with waste queries and access to waste facilities.
- Environmental & Safety Compliance
- Follow all environmental procedures, including duty of care and safe handling of materials.
- Report spills, leaks, pest activity, or environmental risks immediately.
- Adhere to all PPE requirements and safe systems of work.
- Complete dynamic risk assessments when handling waste or operating machinery.
- Report hazards, near misses, or unsafe behaviour to the Duty Manager.
Skills & Experience
- Experience in waste handling, facilities, or environmental services (preferred).
- Understanding of recycling streams and environmental good practice.
- Ability to work independently during quieter evening periods.
- Good communication skills and a proactive, reliable approach.
- Physically capable of handling waste materials and operating equipment safely.
Working Hours – 08:00 – 17:00. (4 days on 2 days off 6 week rotation)
Salary – £13.89/hr
