Purpose of the Role: The Environmental Services Assistant – External works in collaboration with other team members to clean and maintain the Trafford Centre. You are responsible for the day‑to‑day cleaning of specifically agreed areas to the required standards. Delivering deep cleaning, maintenance cleaning and scheduled cleaning of the external areas within the Centre's perimeter. You will be expected to operate a large variety of cleaning and waste equipment and machines (after training) including compactors, balers and vehicular machinery. Sorting and transporting waste from collection points, separate and compact appropriately whilst adhering to the Centre’s recycling policy. You will have the ability to work both individually and within a team. You will be capable of carrying out your duties without constant supervision and be proactive in ensuring your area of responsibility meets the highest possible standards of cleanliness and safety. You should have excellent attention to detail, high standards and a desire to do your job to the best of your abilities always presenting a professional, friendly image.

Cleaning Duties
- Maintain Cleanliness and Standards: Ensure all designated areas, including public spaces, service yards, toilets, and car parks, are cleaned to required standards.
- Maintain and use cleaning machinery properly, including compactors, balers, jetwash, walk‑behind and sit‑and‑ride scrubber dryers, vehicular machinery, rotary scrubber, etc.
- Ensure equipment and machinery is maintained, cleaned, and ready for use. Report any equipment breakdowns or damage immediately, ensuring that faulty items are safely taken out of use and replaced as necessary.
- Operate various cleaning machines as needed, and follow recycling protocols for waste sorting, compacting, and disposal, including safe handling of clinical waste and sharps.
- Perform scheduled, deep, and maintenance cleaning tasks across all areas, such as external areas and entrances, bin rooms, external service yards, compactor, and baler areas.
- Cleaning public toilets (both male and female), walkways, stairwells, and lifts, as well as graffiti removal as needed.
- To litter pick all the landscaped and surrounding areas.
- Clear snow and ice from key access points and support event functions by moving necessary equipment and furniture.
General
- Operate machinery safely using guides and check sheets, ensuring protective gear is always worn.
- Promote the Centre’s recycling policy to retailers and promptly report any maintenance issues within the building.
- Reporting any maintenance defects, deficiencies or repairs required relating to the building and its fixtures and fittings.
- Conduct regular cleaning inspections and adhere to all health and safety regulations to maintain safe working practices.
- Taking care of own and others health and safety. Maintaining safe working practices in line with HASAWA.
- Maintain a good standard of personal appearance and remain flexible with shift assignments as needed.
Person Specification
- Must be physically capable to handle heavy equipment and perform repetitive tasks, including bending, lifting, and pushing.
- A positive and approachable manner.
- Friendly, confident, and adaptable, with a willingness to embrace new ideas and processes.
- The capacity to be self‑motivated with strong organizational skills and initiative to complete tasks independently.
- The ability to be an effective communicator, with good verbal and written communication skills, with a supportive, team‑oriented mindset.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Qualifications
- 1 to 3 years’ proven experience working as a cleaner or transferable abilities within another field.
- Knowledge of external maintenance and cleaning regimes.
- Fully valid UK Driving Licence.
Desirable Qualifications
- Cleaning related qualifications such as BICS.
- Experience of using vehicular and mechanical cleaning equipment.
- RTITB FLT licence.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety policies and procedures relating to cleaning, COSHH, Manual Handling, PPE etc.
- Excellent customer care skills.
