Purpose of the Role
To lead and support the centre in the on-going development of a world class safety culture in line with the QSHE objectives of the business. To support the implementation of Health and Safety Policy and procedures and to develop and maintain site health and safety documentation and compliance, advising departmental managers and staff of Fire Safety & Health and safety responsibilities. Completion of Fire Safety & Health & Safety audits and compliance inspections of landlord’s areas, tenants’ demises and tracking of actions to resolve nonconformance in line with legislation and company policy and procedures. Ensuring all centre Operations and Shop Fit projects are carried out in line with centre safety policies & procedures. Provide fire safety, life safety, emergency procedure and other Health & Safety training to the centre teams on a regular basis to ensure compliance with statutory and policy requirements. To develop strong, positive & proactive relationships with local EHO & other local authority agencies. Management of health & safety systems including but not limited to accident / incident reporting system & processes to support ISO accreditations. Ensuring first class relationships & world class customer service levels are achieved at all times. You will also assist in the general management of the centre and act as Duty Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- You are an ambassador for the centre and for health and safety, and as such you will actively promote recognition for the team, the centre, and the wider business through your exemplary behaviour.
- Promote health and wellbeing, through workplace initiatives, promoting support and escalating concerns to relevant people.
- You will ensure the systems and processes you implement, across the business reflect the intentions of, and are in compliance with, best industry practice (ISO 50001, ISO14001, and ISO45001).
- You will lead the deployment and maintenance of the HS&E training strategy for the centres for which you have responsibility.
- You promote our operational focus on compliance, communication, consistency and collaboration in all you deliver.
- You will empower management team representatives to make H&S related decisions and ensure they are comfortable conducting health and safety related tasks.
- You will communicate and drive the HS&E strategy which will deliver measurable cultural, behavioural and procedural improvements in HS&E performance across our business.
- You will proactively engage with the Centre Director, Operations Managers and centre Duty Managers to ensure, as duty holders they are aligned with the strategy you develop.
- You will produce high level reports detailing health, safety and environmental performance for analysis at Group board level.
- You will work with the Group Head of Risk in developing and implementing projects which are designed to embed our objectives.
- You will offer hands on management with all aspects of health and safety for the centre assisting the senior team in leading periodic H&S committee meetings with a panel of department representatives reviewing all H&S matters.
- You will provide technical and management support for the centre, driving continuous improvement and ensuring legal compliance with all relevant legislation.
- You will liaise with regulatory authorities and professional bodies on health and safety and investigatory issues.
- Ensuring first class relationships & outstanding customer service levels are achieved at all times.
- Flexibility to support evening and nights as required.
- You will be required to be a Duty Manager (on a roster basis).
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Person specification: A high energy professional capable of influencing at all levels, developing excellent relationship management skills with internal and external partners ensuring that all parties are kept briefed in relation to the health, safety and fire strategy. A flexible individual with an ability to work well with others, make clear decisions and continue to deliver results under pressure. Demonstrate excellent skills in organisational ability, oral and written communication, report, document writing and presentations to senior management teams and to the workforce. Ability to manage and prioritise own and centre specific work to meet targets and deadlines. Analytical mind who can interpret regulations and legislation. The ability to effectively respond to complex enquiries or complaints from centre management and retailers. Solve problems and provide innovative solutions. To be enthusiastic, motivational, someone who strives for excellence. Experience in a similar fast-paced customer facing environment.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential: You will be a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) or working towards this. Extensive knowledge of the legal framework across the UK covering H&S, Fire and Environmental disciplines. NEBOSH diploma or similar health and safety qualifications at NVQ IV management level or equivalent. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Risk management strategy development and implementation. Development and implementation of policy and process. Accident/Hazard investigation and analysis to drive improvements. Managing and operating at a senior level within a pressurised environment. Capable of managing change quickly and efficiently whilst maintaining legal compliance. Ability to work well with others, make clear decisions and continue to deliver results under pressure. Health and Safety management skills gained from working within a busy, demanding, pressurised and high profile customer service environment or similar. Expertise in one or more of the following disciplines – Quality/Audit, CDM, Environmental Law, OHSAS implementation, Fire Safety and Training.
Desirable: Previous experience working for a high profile company in the retail / leisure / hospitality sector. NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate. Ability to design and develop service delivery in line with strategic business objectives. Internal QMS auditor.
