Purpose of the Role
The purpose of an external cleaner is to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and presentation of all external areas of the site. This includes keeping entrances, routes, service yards, waste areas, smoking areas, pathways, and external fixtures clean, tidy, and free from litter, debris, spillages, and hazards.

Key Responsibilities
The external cleaner is responsible for keeping all outside areas clean, safe, tidy, and presentable, including litter picking, sweeping, bin areas, entrances, smoking areas, external routes, and reporting any hazards or defects.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Skills
    • Ability to work safely in external environments and changing weather conditions.
    • Good attention to detail.
    • Ability to identify litter, debris, spillages, hazards, and defects.
    • Good time management and ability to follow a cleaning schedule.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Safe use of cleaning equipment, tools, and chemicals.
    • Good communication skills for reporting issues to supervisors or management.
    • Ability to follow site procedures and health and safety instructions.
    • Awareness of safe manual handling when moving bins, bags, or equipment.
    • Ability to respond quickly to urgent cleaning issues.
  • Knowledge
    • Basic understanding of health and safety requirements.
    • Knowledge of COSHH when using cleaning chemicals.
    • Aware of slip, trip, and fall hazards.
    • Understanding of safe waste handling and disposal procedures.
    • Aware of external cleaning standards.
    • Knowledge of safe working around vehicles, delivery areas, routes, and public access areas.
    • Understanding of when to report hazards such as broken glass, sharps, spillages, blocked drains, damaged paving, or pest activity.
  • Experience
    • Previous cleaning experience is desirable but not essential.
    • Experience working in external cleaning, facilities, retail, shopping centre, warehouse, or industrial environments would be beneficial.
    • Experience using cleaning tools such as litter pickers, brushes, shovels, bins, trolleys, and external cleaning equipment.
    • Experience working to set cleaning standards and task frequencies.
    • Experience reporting maintenance or safety issues to a supervisor or manager.

Working Hours – 5 from 7, split shifts
Salary – £13.15 per hour
