The precast civil engineer will oversee technical aspects of our precast concrete operations, focusing on rail and infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include ensuring product quality, safety, and efficiency, driving innovation, and supporting new product development. You will also provide technical support to the commercial team, engaging with customers and suppliers. Ideal candidates will have strong knowledge of concrete, precast manufacturing, reinforcement, and engineering standards, with a background in civil engineering or a related field. The Precast Civil Engineer will report into the Managing Director.
Key accountabilities/scope of work:
- Perform structural calculations for precast concrete elements.
- Design connections, handling points, and transportation methods for precast components.
- Optimize designs for safety, performance, manufacturability, and sustainability.
- Prepare detailed technical drawings, specifications, and bar bending schedules.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant building codes and engineering standards.
- Prepare reports, progress updates, and technical documentation for project management and certification purposes.
- Provide technical guidance and support to manufacturing teams.
- Approve production drawings, material requirements, and quality control procedures.
- Troubleshoot issues related to concrete mix design, reinforcement, and element dimensions.
- Work closely with clients, architects, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Provide technical support to the commercial team with technical queries and claims.
- Liaise with planning, quality control, and supply chain teams.
Quality & Compliance:
- Ensure all work complies with relevant codes, standards, and safety regulations.
- Monitor and control material usage, waste, and product quality.
Special accountabilities:
- Champion Continuous Improvement philosophy & strive for best practice across all aspects.
- Support and develop others and knowledge-share.
- Keep up to date with industry developments, and bring these to the fore, as appropriate.
Key experience, qualifications and skills:
- Preferred experience in concrete/pre-cast sector, construction materials or construction sector generally.
- Experience of operating in their chosen sphere of expertise, and able to bring this experience to the fore when carrying out the duties of the role.
- Keeps abreast of advancement in their chosen field of expertise.
- Education: Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years’ experience, with specific expertise in reinforced concrete and steel design.
- Knowledge of design standards, codes, and proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Tekla, and Excel.
- Strong communication skills for liaising with clients, contractors, and internal teams, with clear documentation and reporting.
- ICE Chartered status is advantageous but not essential.
- Industry experience in precast concrete is a plus.
- Degree or other equivalent higher education/technical qualification.
- MS Office and strong computer skills.
- IOSH safety training.
