We are looking for a Laboratory Assistant to join us in Royston. Join our Research and Development team as a Laboratory Assistant and play a key role in supporting Scientists, the Product Development team and Operations in laboratory testing and research.

Through preparing reagents, handling samples, helping with experiments, assisting with data recording and analysis, supporting the day to day maintenance of equipment as well as carrying out stock take duties that enable our teams to focus on what matters most: better health for more people. Based in Royston Hertfordshire, you will become part of a team of eight dedicated professionals who look forward to shaping the future together with you.

Your Responsibilities

  • Support Scientists and development teams with the execution of laboratory experiments and biological or biochemical assays, following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Prepare reagents, samples and other materials for testing, and ensure equipment is operational and ready for use.
  • Carefully follow and understand SOPs, seek clarification where required and suggest practical improvements when appropriate.
  • Record experimental activities, unexpected occurrences and results accurately, and upload raw data to the relevant project location in line with agreed timelines.
  • Conduct laboratory tests, assist with data analysis and communicate findings or any delays promptly to the relevant Scientist.
  • Identify and troubleshoot routine issues with equipment, software or experimental procedures, escalating more complex issues when necessary.
  • Clean, sterilise and maintain laboratory equipment and work areas in accordance with health, safety and ISO requirements.
  • Support the smooth running of the laboratory by maintaining stock lists, ensuring materials are available, and coordinating routine maintenance and material orders with the laboratory coordinator.
  • Pursue training on unfamiliar systems, equipment or assays and remain flexible to support additional tasks needed for the successful and timely completion of projects.

What will convince us

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory practices, or previous experience working in a laboratory environment and following health and safety procedures.
  • Strong organisational, multitasking and decision-making skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the confidence to seek clarification and report issues promptly.
  • A proactive, practical approach to identifying and resolving routine problems.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, work independently and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to support changing project requirements and take on tasks beyond strictly biological testing.
  • Exposure to upstream bioprocessing would be advantageous, as the team predominantly supports this area, although this is not essential for this role.
  • Previous experience with microbial bioreactor culture would be beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Wescale and SAP ERP for procurement, ordering or goods receipting would be beneficial.
