Flexible Freelance Hours, 3–4 days per week (approx. 24–30 hours)

Seeking an experienced Freelance Darkroom Technician to join a small, dedicated team at Sarah England's Darkroom in producing traditional analogue handprints and scans for the creative and photographic industry.

The ideal candidate has a passion for analogue photography, strong problem-solving and technical skills, a meticulous eye for detail and maintains quality working under pressured deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • High-Resolution Scanning & Digital Conversion: Scanning handprints using Epson scanners and Silver Fast software to a professional level.
  • Image Processing: Perform high-level digital processing of handprints, including spotting and colour management/calibration.
  • Analogue Production: Manage daily darkroom tasks, including chemical mixing, darkroom maintenance, paper cutting, and processing black-and-white prints in trays.
  • Negative Handling & Handprinting: Mark negatives accurately and set up test prints.
  • Workflow & Archiving: Keep files and negatives highly organised, archiving digital and analogue work, and uploading final digital deliverables directly to clients & agencies.

Requirements & Skills

Technical

Expertise: Proven experience and advanced knowledge of Photoshop, Epson or other models of scanners, Silver Fast software, and digital image management/retouching.

Must be comfortable using a Wacom tablet and Mac systems.

Analogue Knowledge: Broad understanding of analogue processing, wet lab workflows, and traditional printing techniques.

Soft Skills: A self-motivated worker who is highly organised, curious, and comfortable in a client-facing role within a small team environment.

Experienced darkroom technicians, candidates with digital printing experience, and professional retouchers will all be highly considered.
