The platform is a set of technologies, tools, and services that enable others to build on top of it. The Database Administrator Engineer (DBA) is responsible for the ongoing deployment, management and maintenance of development and production environments within cloud native infrastructure. Working within the Platform Team, alongside colleagues from across complementary Platforms and Products lines, as well as Enterprise Architecture, Compliance, Information Security, Customer IT, the Senior Platform Engineer drives quality and repeatability into their work through a mixture of SecDevOps methodologies and Reliability Engineering.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Database Backup: Implement and manage comprehensive backup procedures to safeguard against data loss. Regular backups are essential for data recovery in case of hardware failures, data corruption, or other disasters. Verify the integrity of backups and periodically test restore processes to ensure they can be executed smoothly when needed.
  • Database Security: Implement robust security measures to protect databases from unauthorized access, breaches, and other threats. This includes setting up firewalls, encryption, and access controls. Continuously monitor for security vulnerabilities and apply necessary patches and updates to maintain a secure environment.
  • Design: Design and structure databases to efficiently store, retrieve, and manage data. This involves creating schemas, tables, indexes, and other database objects that meet the organization’s needs. Collaborate with developers and data analysts to design databases that support the organization's applications and reporting requirements. Ensure designs are maintained in conjunction with Design Engineering standards and practices.
  • Monitor Database Performance: Continuously monitor database performance to identify and resolve issues proactively. Performance monitoring tools and scripts help in tracking metrics like query execution times, CPU usage, and disk I/O. Optimize database operations by tuning SQL queries, adjusting indexes, and configuring hardware resources.
  • Set and Maintain Database Standards: Establish and enforce database standards and best practices to ensure consistency and reliability across all database environments. Develop guidelines for database design, development, and maintenance to be followed by the team.

About You:

You’ll be a technologist at heart, with a passion for learning and an eagerness to share knowledge with others. Previous experience (5 years minimum) working with large scale cloud infrastructure and services within Azure.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), SQL, Python, and database management tools. Demonstrable experience utilising modern SecDevOps/CloudOps practices and processes to build and operate the cloud platform with prevention, resilience and reliability as core principles.

Experience: 5+ years of experience in database administration, preferably in a cloud environment. Excellent communication abilities, problem-solving abilities, and knowledge of query language(s) for database operations. Knowledge of Windows and Linux command operations are required. Adequate database design knowledge and knowledge of database management systems is required. Excellent knowledge of database tools. Design of services to drive the use of technology to keep services safe and available. Knowledge of modern industry practices and adoption.
