We’re on the lookout for an experienced Management Forester to plan, execute, and achieve the operational estate management, harvesting objectives, and targets for fibre production within resource & SHEQ parameters to ensure a sustainable and low-cost fibre supply to Sappi mills and external customers.
As a Management Forester, you will be responsible for:
- Building, maintaining, and reinforcing a “predict and prevent” safety culture in all operations.
- Regularly inspecting operations to identify risks and ensure timely action (blanking & pest control, coppice management).
- Planning and conducting field inspections to ensure crops achieve maximum yields within cost constraints, considering timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management).
- Using the Fire Risk Management System (FRMS) to identify risks, and recording & implementing fire control procedures to protect people, plantations, and assets from forest fires.
- Developing a tactical plan and ensuring the annual operational plan for both commercial and open areas complies with standards and SLAs.
- Creating pre-harvest plans per compartment in collaboration with contractors and silviculture teams.
- Conducting risk assessments per compartment to mitigate potential risks.
- Managing the harvesting budget effectively to meet sales targets (tons/day).
- Collaborating with the Roads Engineer to compile an annual tactical road maintenance plan.
- Scheduling short-haul and loading operations to ensure timely rail/road transport.
- Maintaining company assets such as buildings, villages, and houses according to standards and within budget.
- Maintaining effective relations with communities and stakeholders to uphold the company\’s image, mitigate risks, and foster relationships.
What are we looking for?
- National Diploma in Forestry or related qualification.
- Minimum of three years relevant experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
