Job Description:
Santander Consumer Finance UK (SCUK) is based in Redhill, Surrey, providing motor finance to a network of car dealerships throughout the United Kingdom.
We are seeking a Risk Controller to report directly to the CEO and be responsible to the CRO for managing various risk types within the Line of Defence (LoD).
This role will assist and, when necessary, deputize for the CRO in overseeing, managing, and controlling risks, ensuring alignment with the Santander Consumer UK risk appetite statement (RAS) approved by the Board of Directors. The role involves maintaining a comprehensive view of all risks, including identification, monitoring, and assessment of their impact on the company\’s risk profile.
This is a hybrid role requiring presence in the Redhill office at least days a week. Remote work will not be considered.
Responsibilities will include:
- Leading a team responsible for the LoD.
- Driving high performance and fostering a culture aligned with company values.
- Providing leadership in accordance with risk policies and UK regulations.
- Promoting a strong risk culture and awareness across all risk types, including legal and industry trends.
- Ensuring systems, processes, and tools are adequate and robust for risk management.
- Accessing all business lines and legal entities to identify emerging risks and concentrations.
- Monitoring risk appetite and policies to ensure consistency with business plans and risk profile.
- Leading SCUK’s Climate Risk initiatives, ensuring compliance with governance and reporting standards.
- Ensuring material risks are identified, measured, and controlled in the short and medium term.
- Understanding and promoting ‘Treating Customers Fairly’ principles.
- Owner of Model Risk, validating models and methodologies independently.
- Overseeing Market Risk, including structural and liquidity risk management.
- Overseeing Capital Risk, including RWA, securitizations, and risk appetite controls.
- Managing monthly credit risk reporting, including risk budgets, forecasts, and actuals.
- Liaising with risk, finance, and HQ to align reporting needs.
- Setting and monitoring medium- and long-term credit risk objectives.
- Coaching and developing team members.
- Understanding and managing risks within the business and ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
- Defining risk frameworks, appetite, triggers, thresholds, policies, and controls.
- Ensuring risk management aligns with the business and regulatory environment.
- Leading stress testing and scenario analysis, including regulatory stress tests and ICAAP scenarios.
- Monitoring risk exposures and generating management reports.
- Promoting best practices and continuous improvement in risk management.
- Escalating risks and breaches appropriately and ensuring remedial actions are in place.
- Maintaining risk KPIs and reporting systems.
- Chairing the Provisions Sub-Committee and reporting to the Risk Committee.
- Upholding commitments to Consumer Duty and customer-first principles.
What we’re looking for:
- Proven experience as a Risk Controller, preferably in Motor Finance within Financial Services.
- Expertise in risk management, including Risk Control, Model Risk, and Market Risk.
- Ability to identify, assess, and report risks across the organization.
- Strong risk culture promotion and policy shaping skills.
- Strategic understanding of data management and business performance.
- Knowledge of auto finance strategies and models.
- Experience in leading high-performing teams and fostering a risk-aware culture.
- Budget management experience, including forecasting and actuals.
- Analytical skills with proficiency in Excel/VBA and preferably SQL/SAS.
- Understanding of consumer finance credit cycles and regulatory frameworks.
- Knowledge of IFRS provisions and stress testing models.
