As a Senior Operational Risk Manager, you’ll be there to help protect the bank and our customers from an ever-evolving Non-Financial Risk (NFR) landscape. If you’re an advanced industry level subject matter expert at NFR Frameworks, Methodologies and Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) tooling, with demonstrable experience leading framework design and oversight at a prominent financial services firm, this could be the role for you.

You’ll be acting as a senior risk manager within Compliance & Non-Financial Risk accountable for design, oversight and governance of the NFR Framework, methodologies, related standards and tooling. This is a critical role to embed effective operational risk management practices and standards across Santander UK, ensuring the business understands and owns its risk profile.

This role will be responsible for continuously developing, enhancing and implementing the operational risk framework tools and methodologies, enabling the business to identify, assess and where appropriate, mitigate its major operational risk exposures.

You’ll lead positive change as an expert risk professional, overseeing the completion of risk identification reviews, the assessment of controls effectiveness, and the reporting of operational risk metrics as 2nd line of defence. You’ll prepare, write up and review risk analysis and Operational Risk Assessments for that relate to the framework, methodologies and tooling.

At times you may be required to deputise for the Head of the department.

Our expectation is that you are a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on NFR Frameworks, Tooling and Programme matters, including its development and maintenance, while partnering with teams across Line 1, Line 2 and Group to drive and support its implementation and embedding across the business.

You’ll act as owner for the GRC System, working with key stakeholders across three lines of defence and Grupo Santander on programme management, data quality, and enhancement requests.

Managing Risk and Applying Control

  • Pivotal role leading the design, implementation and ongoing enhancement of the bank’s Non-Financial Risk Framework, policies and related oversight.
  • Lead rapidly evolving risk initiatives and alignment with regulatory requirements and industry expectations.
  • Own, enhance and maintain the NFR Framework, ensuring it aligns with regulatory requirements and expectations, alongside industry best practices.
  • Develop and continuously refine policies, standards and related methodologies to the framework.
  • Own the Governance, Risk & Compliance tooling and technologies that support the framework, working closely with Grupo Santander Head Office to ensure the tools align with industry standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Embed the framework across the organisation providing guidance and training, ensure best practices and consistent application across businesses and functions.
  • Own the bank’s NFR policy structure, ensuring they remain relevant, comprehensive and adaptable to emerging risks and further concepts including transversal risks.
  • Develop and maintain robust methodologies for risk identification, assessment, monitoring and reporting.
  • Oversee the design and application of Key Risk Indicators to monitor framework compliance and embeddedness.
  • Lead development and continuous uplift of NFR training suite across the framework, ensuring the promotion and reinforcement of best practice.
  • Promotes and encourages good culture and behaviours personally and across the Team, in line with Risk Pro.

  • Partners with relevant business areas providing actionable advice on current and emerging issues and supports with technical risk input.

  • Reviews and challenges through senior management the first line of defence to ensure operational risks are reported and mitigated appropriately.
  • Creates understanding and stakeholder buy-in to Risk objectives and priorities

  • Proactively assesses issues through the eyes of other people particularly the customer.
  • Assesses the impact of changes and enhancements on customers and clients.
  • Represent and be an ambassador for the firm in industry forums and working groups, ensuring that the firm remains closely connected to regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Build and develop regulatory relationships, ensuring that requirements and initiatives are closely aligned with regulatory expectations.
  • Represent the firm in regulatory and statutory audit forums.

Applying Commercial and Industry Expertise

  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge and understanding of the financial services industry, in particular of operational risk practices and regulations.
  • Expert knowledge of industry best practices and FCA, PRA, EU and BCBS rules and inter-agency guidance for operational risk management and their application to Financial Institutions.
  • Proven track record leading the design, development and implementation of operational risk frameworks, policies, and tools.
  • Extensive experience and proven leadership of operational risk management and control methodologies, as well as their successful application.
  • Extensive experience in governance and control frameworks, GRC tooling and insights.
  • Expert knowledge of external market dynamics and regulation and how this impacts role.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert across risk areas of specialism, regarded throughout Risk and key business areas as the first point of call for advice.

What you’ll bring:

  • You’re an industry renowned expert on risk management and internal control.
  • You have deep experience and theoretical understanding of non-financial risk concepts and techniques, with ability to translate knowledge and experience into principles and requirements to add value to the business.
  • You’re an expert in operational risk management disciplines
  • You demonstrate expertise in GRC Systems and tooling, including their design and implementation, proven with benchmarking to industry best practices.
  • You are an adept practitioner at GRC Reporting Tools
  • You are expert at building and influencing the design of tactical and strategic planning to solving problems.
  • You hold expert industry knowledge and are able to apply best practices.
  • You are educated to at least degree level with a relevant academic qualification

It would also be nice for you to have:

  • Experience in leading GRC tooling implementations and change management.
  • Experience at Board and C-suite level discussions, influencing and negotiating skills across key governance forums – achieving consensus on solutions while delivering challenging goals.
  • Relevant industry qualification in operational and NFR.
  • Expert knowledge and experience of the Financial Services industry and of the associated UK regulatory environment.

  • This role is based in Milton Keynes.
  • Our preferred location for this role is Milton Keynes, but we’ll also consider locating the role in Belfast, Bradford, Glasgow & Sheffield

To support this, we offer site-based contracts with a hybrid working pattern and our expected level of attendance in an office is at least 12 days per month (pro-rata for part-time roles).

  • Eligible for a discretionary performance-related annual bonus.
