Financial Crime (FC) is a critical function within Santander UK, responsible for shaping and delivering the Bank’s Financial Crime strategy, strengthening risk management frameworks, operating and enhancing the Bank’s FC control environment, and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory expectations.

The FC Controls, Competency & Training Senior Manager is responsible for leading the Controls, Competency & Training capability across Screening, Transaction Monitoring, SARU and CORU. This includes oversight of Quality Control, colleague training and coaching and competency management. This role will lead the definition, embedding and continuous improvement of consistent quality and competency standards across Name Screening, Transaction Screening, Trade Finance, Transaction Monitoring, SARU and CORU, working through a matrix of senior operational, risk and control stakeholders.

Working closely with the Screening/TM/SARU & CORU leadership team and wider Financial Crime stakeholders, you will coordinate activity to ensure standards are understood, embedded, evidenced and continuously improved. This role provides critical support in maintaining a robust Financial Crime control environment, ensuring quality outcomes, training needs, competency gaps and remediation actions are identified, governed and delivered.

  • Driving the end-to-end Controls, Competency & Training strategy across Name Screening, Transaction Screening, Trade Finance, Transaction Monitoring, SARU and CORU.
  • Leading quality control oversight across Financial Crime operational capabilities, ensuring sampling, thematic reviews, and outcome testing are robust and aligned to standards and risk appetite.
  • Owning the strategy and design of training and coaching frameworks that build colleague capability and support consistent quality outcomes.
  • Leading competency management and oversight, ensuring colleagues and managers have clear standards, evidence, governance and remediation plans.
  • Managing and developing a team of S3 managers and specialist resources across quality control, competency, training and coaching.
  • Coordinating activities and dependencies across the department, wider Financial Crime teams, Business Units and Central Controls Office.
  • Identifying and escalating quality themes, control gaps, competency risks and operational issues, supporting timely root-cause analysis and remediation.
  • Supporting governance, MI and reporting to provide clear visibility of quality, training, competency and procedural performance.
  • Driving continuous improvement, simplifying ways of working and supporting transformation and technology-enabled enhancements across the capability.

  • Extensive experience in Financial Crime within a Financial Services environment, with experience across Screening, Transaction Screening, Transaction Monitoring, SARU and/or CORU (Required)
  • Excellent experience leading Quality Control, Quality Assurance, or Audit activity in a regulated operational environment, including thematic analysis, calibration, feedback and remediation (Required)
  • Experience in Financial Crime – (Required)
  • Professional qualifications (ACAMS/ICA) – (Preferred)
  • Degree level education, quality/competency/training certification or equivalent experience - (Preferred)
  • Ability to translate policy, regulatory and control requirements into practical procedures, training, coaching, quality control and competency solutions. (Required)
  • Great analytical and MI skills, with the ability to identify themes, root causes, risks and improvement opportunities from quality and performance data. (Required)
  • Experience designing, embedding or overseeing training, coaching and competency frameworks within Financial Crime or similarly regulated operations (Preferred)
  • Excellent understanding of Financial Crime controls, regulatory expectations and policy/standards implementation (Required)
  • Great stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work across Operations, Risk & Control, Policy, Audit, Assurance and Technology teams. (Required)
  • Great organisational and governance skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, dependencies and senior forums. (Required)
  • Effective leadership and communication skills, including coaching, influencing and clear written/verbal communication. (Required)
  • People management experience leading managers and/or specialist teams, with proven ability to build capability and drive performance (Required)
  • Excellent judgement and decision-making skills, particularly when balancing regulatory expectations, customer outcomes, operational risk and delivery priorities. (Required)
  • Resilience and adaptability, with the ability to operate effectively through change, ambiguity and evolving regulatory or business priorities. (Required)

Salary Range: £84,614.00 - £126,922.00 per annum (depending on experience). This salary range represents the expected remuneration for the role. Annual salary is based on a standard 35-hour working week. Actual salary offered will depend on skills, experience, qualifications and location.
