About the role:

The Impact, Reporting & Evaluation Lead plays a central role in helping the Institute understand, demonstrate and maximise its impact. Working within the Strategy team, the role provides the Institute with a clear, evidence-based understanding of its strategic performance by leading evaluation of the Institute's strategy, generating insight from performance and impact data, and producing high-quality reporting for internal and external stakeholders.

As the Institute's expert in monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL), the role will establish and maintain frameworks that assess strategic outcomes, measure impact and support evidence-based decision-making. By synthesising data, evidence and learning from across the organisation, the postholder will help shape future strategic priorities and ensure that the Institute can effectively demonstrate the value and impact of its science. This is an opportunity to build and embed a capability that will influence decision-making at the highest levels of the Institute and contribute to shaping its future direction.

We welcome applications from individuals with a broad range of skills and experience and encourage applications from curiosity-driven people with backgrounds that don’t exactly fit our requirements, but who can provide proof of exceptional work. We place a high value on work-life balance and are dedicated to supporting our team members with family-friendly policies and benefits, including flexible working arrangements. We welcome full- and part-time applicants for this role.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the development and implementation of monitoring, evaluation and learning frameworks that assess strategic outcomes and measure organisational impact.
  • Maintaining the Institute-wide strategic evaluation framework and ensuring consistent monitoring and reporting of strategic performance.
  • Translating data and performance information into clear, actionable insights that support decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Coordinating the production of strategic reports, including funder updates, Board reports and senior leadership reporting.
  • Developing compelling narratives that communicate the Institute's achievements, impact and progress against strategic priorities.
  • Providing expert advice and guidance on impact evaluation approaches to colleagues, strategic initiatives and external collaborations.
  • Working closely with the Portfolio Delivery Office (PDO) to align project-level and strategic data, supporting evaluation and reporting activities.
  • Engaging stakeholders across the Institute to gather evidence, insights and inputs required for monitoring and evaluation activities.
  • Collaborating with colleagues at Wellcome and across the wider organisation to align reporting frameworks, analytical approaches and evaluation methodologies.
  • Coordinating contributions from subject matter experts and stakeholders to ensure high-quality reporting outputs and consistent messaging.

About you:

You are an experienced evaluation, performance or impact professional who enjoys turning complex information into meaningful insight. You are analytical and curious, with the ability to identify patterns, trends and evidence that help inform strategic decisions. You are comfortable working with both quantitative and qualitative information and can communicate findings in ways that resonate with a wide range of audiences. You combine strong technical evaluation expertise with excellent stakeholder management skills, enabling you to build trust and influence across a complex organisation. You are equally comfortable developing frameworks and methodologies as you are producing compelling reports and presenting insights to senior leaders. You are motivated by the opportunity to help demonstrate the impact of world-leading science and ensure that evidence and learning are at the heart of organisational decision-making.

To excel in this role, you will need the following skills and experience:

Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) frameworks, methodologies and theories of change.
  • Knowledge of strategic performance measurement and impact evaluation approaches.
  • Understanding of data analysis, interpretation and reporting methodologies.
  • Familiarity with research, funding or evidence-based environments and their reporting requirements.

Experience

  • Leading evaluation, impact assessment or strategic performance reporting activities.
  • Producing high-quality reports that translate complex data into meaningful narratives and insights.
  • Managing stakeholder relationships across complex organisations.
  • Developing or implementing evaluation frameworks and approaches to measuring impact.
  • Coordinating inputs from multiple contributors and delivering work to challenging deadlines.

Skills and Capabilities

  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret complex datasets and generate actionable insights.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, compelling reports for a range of audiences.
  • Strong data visualisation and presentation skills, communicating evidence effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship-building abilities.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate diverse inputs.
  • Ability to synthesise information from multiple sources and develop evidence-based recommendations.
