Birtley House Specialist Independent School is seeking a dedicated, caring, and compassionate Midday Supervisor to join our supportive team from September 2026. The role involves 2 hours per day from 11.30 to 1.30, plus an extra hour on Friday afternoons.

The successful candidate will supervise pupils during the lunchtime period, overseeing packed lunches, supporting positive social interaction, and listening to pupils read. Our pupils have a range of special educational needs and require staff who demonstrate patience, understanding, empathy, and a commitment to supporting their individual needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure pupils eating are seated in an orderly fashion and assist pupils, as necessary, during the meal break to ensure their wellbeing.
  • Provide drinks, help with spillages, and open packets as needed.
  • Once meals are finished, ensure the tables are wiped down and left clean and tidy.
  • Assist in moving pupils to the outside play areas and supervise areas used by the pupils to ensure safe and appropriate behaviour is observed.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and encourage pupil participation in a varied programme of group play/games/activities.
  • Prepare, utilise, and tidy away a range of equipment, materials, and resources to provide activities which engage and motivate children.
  • Encourage positive interaction and play between pupils to promote inclusion and sharing.
  • Encourage good behaviour in accordance with school behaviour policies and rules.
  • Report any incidents to the class teacher to ensure continuity/communication between the playground and the classroom.
  • Encourage pupils to tidy equipment away and ensure it is completed.
  • Listen to pupils read before and after the lunchtime break.
  • Provide first aid treatment, recording any incidents that occur in accordance with the school first aid policy.
  • Attend SEN/Safeguarding training as directed by the Headteacher.
