Overview
In this role you will lead Sandwell’s Building Control service, driving compliant, customer-focused delivery and commercial performance. You’ll shape service strategy, manage complex projects and partnerships, and ensure regulatory compliance across Building Regulations and Building Safety Regulator requirements. You will lead a team, oversee budgets and income generation, and champion innovation to improve efficiency. Responsibilities
- Provide professional and technical leadership to Building Control Surveyors and wider service teams
- Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, legislation and Building Safety Regulator requirements
- Act as operational lead for Building Control and drive continuous service improvement
- Manage complex and high-profile building control projects, including major commercial developments
- Oversee performance, quality assurance, customer service standards and outcomes
- Develop and implement policies, procedures and innovative ways of working
- Lead on dangerous structures, enforcement matters, sports ground safety and emergency response
- Manage service budgets, trading accounts and financial performance; drive income generation
- Promote a commercial approach to service delivery and grow market share
- Develop partnerships with customers, developers, contractors, elected members and external agencies
- Prepare reports and briefings for senior management, committees and regulatory bodies
- Support the implementation of new technology and digital solutions to improve efficiency and customer experience
- Lead, motivate and develop staff with training and regulatory registration requirements
Key requirements
- Degree or equivalent in Building Control or related discipline; professional qualification
- Member of a professional body and eligible for Building Safety Regulator registration (Class 2F/4)
- Significant Building Control experience with complex applications
- Experience of managing change
- Strong understanding of Building Control legislation and public safety requirements
- Experience of enforcement, dangerous structures and sports ground compliance
- Commercial awareness with income generation, budgeting and business planning
- Effective communication with influence, negotiation and relationship-building
- Excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment
- Sound judgement on complex technical, operational and regulatory issues
