We are seeking a passionate and committed Lecturer in English to join our team at Sandwell College on a full‑time, permanent basis. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real impact by supporting students to develop the essential literacy skills they need for further study, employment, and everyday life. As a Lecturer in English (Functional Skills), you will deliver high‑quality teaching to learners across a range of programmes, helping them to build confidence and competence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You will play a key role in improving student outcomes, contributing to curriculum development, and creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment that supports all learners to achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills English lessons
- Develop and adapt learning materials to meet diverse learner needs
- Assess student work and provide constructive feedback
- Monitor and track student progress to support achievement and retention
- Maintain accurate academic and administrative records
- Act as a personal tutor, providing academic and pastoral support
- Contribute to curriculum development and quality improvement
- Use ILT and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning
- Participate in team meetings, CPD, and college events
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
- A degree or relevant qualification in English or a related subject
- Teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one)
- Experience delivering Functional Skills or GCSE English
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Ability to motivate and inspire learners of varying abilities
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and safeguarding
Desirable
- Experience working in a Further Education setting
- Knowledge of current Functional Skills curriculum and assessment
- Experience supporting learners with additional needs
Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding
To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:
- DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- Certificate in Education
- PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
- ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education)
- DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
- DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject
If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998).
Not Accepted as Stand Alone Qualifications:
- PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- CTLLS (Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)
