We are looking for an innovative individual who is driven to establish, shape and grow outstanding dietetic services across diabetes for our diverse population. Candidates will be joining a service at a time of challenge but also considerable opportunity. You will need to use highly developed interpersonal skills to quickly establish and foster strong relationships with a range of key stakeholders to lead a small dietetic team who work across paediatric and adult diabetes services.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be familiar with supporting people, carers and or parents with dietary advice to optimise their blood glucose control and quality of life; working closely with the diabetes MDTs to ensure a high-quality seamless service to these patients and with an increasing exposure to insulin pumps. We have a friendly, supportive and approachable MDT who champion the dietitian and our service promotes one to one and group educational care. As a service we provide DAFNE group sessions and the Roche carbohydrate counting course to our service users and are soon to pilot the VICTOR course with our adult service users. Our paediatric diabetes team is renowned regionally for their success in supporting patients to successfully lower the HbA1c levels and the post-holder will get the opportunity to work with patients requiring insulin pumps.

The duties of this exciting role will include supporting service users primarily within a diabetes outpatient setting and leading a small team of four dietitians within diabetes. As well as the clinical role the appointee will be overseeing implementation of best nutritional care for the patients within the Trust within the field of diabetes.

The Nutrition and Dietetics Department is a growing team of 40 clinicians; based across Sandwell and West Birmingham. The department is friendly, sociable and progressive and you will be warmly welcomed. The culture in this department is supportive and staff welfare and wellbeing is paramount. We have regular departmental meetings, clinical supervision sessions and education meetings. Continuing professional development is promoted and as part of the job role training is also supported upon commencement of the role. The Department trains student dietitians from Coventry and Birmingham City Universities across the full range of placements. There is excellent administrative support and IT facilities, along with access to modern Trust library facilities.

Qualifications

  • HCPC Registration
  • Post registration qualification or working towards post registration qualification e.g. masters degree level
  • Evidence of continued Professional Development relevant to clinical area
  • Membership of relevant clinical specialist BDA interest group
  • Leadership Qualification
  • DAFNE accredited trainer

Experience

  • Demonstration of post registration/ qualification/ experience and documented evidence of continued professional development in the management of diabetes
  • Extensive post-graduate clinical experience in diabetes with both group and individual interventions
  • Responsive to changing service needs and pressures, with a proven ability to implement change (clinically/ managerially)
  • Clinical supervisory skills training and past involvement in student training
  • Is able to support patients on insulin pumps/ blood glucose monitoring devices where required for this patient group
  • Awareness of current national and local agenda in NHS and social care
  • Awareness of clinical governance and its application with experience and involvement in audit & research
  • First line management/leadership experience and ability to lead, supervise and deploy staff effectively to meet service needs
  • Managerial experience of other dietetic staff/non-registered staff, supporting their development
  • Experience of appraisal and performance managing staff
  • Advanced practice based competencies related to insulin management
  • Facilitation of student training
