Own a business-critical SQL environment. Lead modernisation. Build better data foundations in a role with real scope and visibility.
A well-established business in Bristol is investing in its systems, data, and long-term technology roadmap. They are looking for a Database Engineer to take ownership of a sizeable SQL Server estate, improve standards, and help drive a transformation of legacy systems to modern systems. As Database Engineer, you will be central to improving performance, upgrading legacy environments, strengthening security, streamlining data flows, and shaping how data supports reporting, operations, and future analytics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take ownership of the SQL Server estate across a complex operational environment.
- Lead SQL upgrades, standardisation, and estate simplification.
- Build and maintain ETL pipelines and improve how data is collected, transformed, and made usable.
- Support database migration, integration, and data modelling work across legacy and modern systems.
- Improve data quality, governance, performance, and security across core platforms.
- Work with developers and business teams to support better authentication, cleaner data architecture, and more reliable reporting.
- Contribute to the longer-term direction of the data environment as the business introduces more modern tooling over time.
What we are looking for:
- Experience in a Database Engineer, SQL Engineer, or Data Engineer role.
- Strong SQL Server skills covering administration, optimisation, and performance tuning.
- Solid experience with ETL, data pipelines, integration, and large datasets.
- Good understanding of database migration, data warehousing, and data modelling.
- Exposure to Azure or modern data platforms would be useful, but it is not essential from day one.
- Someone proactive, hands-on, and motivated by improving an environment rather than simply maintaining it.
Additional benefits:
- Hybrid working with 3 days on site and 2 from home.
- Free parking.
- Train station within walking distance.
- Subsidised canteen on-site.
- Gym on-site.
- Cycle-to-work scheme.
- A friendly, collaborative IT team with the chance to make a visible long-term impact.
