Overview
This role sits within a specialist engineering team delivering secure, enterprise-scale cloud and data platforms for UK Government and defence clients. The work focuses on modernising data infrastructure, enabling secure data sharing, and supporting advanced analytics and AI workloads in highly regulated environments. Projects range from shorter delivery engagements to long-term platform builds, delivered within agile teams solving complex, real-world challenges.
The role
As a Lead DevOps Engineer, you'll take a hands-on role in designing, building and operating secure cloud environments that support both batch and real-time data platforms. Alongside this, you'll act as a technical lead within the team, helping to shape engineering standards, support delivery, and mentor other engineers. You'll be involved across the full lifecycle, from design and build through to deployment, optimisation and ongoing support, with a strong focus on automation, security and reliability.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver cloud infrastructure and platforms using Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD
- Design secure environments aligned to DevSecOps and zero trust principles
- Support production systems, including incident resolution and ongoing maintenance
- Contribute to solution design, automation and continuous improvement
- Mentor engineers and provide technical direction
Experience required
You’ll bring strong experience building and running production-grade cloud platforms, ideally within secure or regulated environments, along with a practical, hands-on DevOps mindset. You should be comfortable with:
- AWS and hybrid cloud environments
- Infrastructure-as-Code tooling such as Terraform and/or Ansible
- CI/CD pipelines and source control (GitHub, GitLab, Atlassian)
- Container platforms including Kubernetes, Docker, EKS or AKS
- Modern data or event-driven systems (e.g. Kafka, Flink)
This is a role suited to someone who enjoys working on complex, security-focused systems and wants to combine hands-on engineering with team leadership in a high-trust environment.
