Location: Hybrid / London

Day Rate: £500 p.d inside IR35

A leading consultancy is supporting a flagship central-government transformation and is looking for a Senior VMware & Automation Engineer to help modernise and automate a large, secure virtual infrastructure estate. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building reliable automation at scale and wants their work to have national impact.

The role

You will lead automated VM lifecycle management across a complex VMware environment, creating efficient provisioning pipelines and improving how the platform is delivered, secured, and operated. You will work closely with platform SMEs and engineering teams to ensure consistent, compliant, and high-quality VM operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and optimise automated VM provisioning and lifecycle workflows using PowerCLI, VMware Aria, APIs, and IaC tooling.
  • Improve automation for VM creation, configuration, retirement, scaling, monitoring, and policy enforcement.
  • Recommend tooling and automation approaches (PowerCLI, Aria Automation, Terraform, Ansible).
  • Manage and enhance operations across vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and integrated VMware platforms.
  • Support NSX, vSAN, DRS, backup tooling, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
  • Maintain documentation aligned with government security and audit standards.
  • Contribute to resilience and disaster-recovery planning.

What you will bring

  • 7+ years' VMware engineering experience in enterprise or government settings.
  • Strong automation background with PowerCLI, VMware Aria, and IaC patterns.
  • Solid understanding of NSX, vSAN, DRS, snapshots, backups, and monitoring.
  • Experience in secure, air-gapped, or zero-trust environments.
  • VMware certifications (VCP/VCAP) preferred.
