Job TITLE - Junior Fabric Technologist

Reports to - Technical Manager

Location - Lancaster (Some travel may be required)

Scope of job - To support the Technical Manager in the development, testing and evaluation of new and existing fabrics. The role combines laboratory testing with product development activities, ensuring fabrics meet company, customer and regulatory requirements. The Junior Fabric Technologist will assist with new material sourcing, fabric performance testing, technical documentation and continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining accurate records and supporting the introduction of innovative products.

Purpose - To provide technical and laboratory support for product development, quality assurance and fabric innovation by carrying out testing, evaluating materials, maintaining technical records and assisting with the implementation of new fabrics, finishes and processes. The role supports the delivery of products that meet quality, performance and sustainability standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare fabric samples and test specimens for internal and external testing.
  • Carry out laboratory testing in accordance with BS, ISO and customer specifications.
  • Record, analyse and communicate test results accurately and promptly.
  • Produce technical reports and maintain testing records within company systems.
  • Support the development and evaluation of new fabrics, coatings, finishes and technologies.
  • Conduct physical and visual fabric assessments including handle, printability, shrinkage, colorfastness and appearance.
  • Assist with sourcing and evaluating new raw materials and suppliers.
  • Maintain development samples, laboratory archives and technical documentation ensuring full traceability.
  • Support product development trials and implementation of new testing methods and processes.
  • Prepare samples for external laboratories and monitor testing progress.
  • Assist with investigations into fabric performance, manufacturing and quality issues.
  • Prepare laboratory solutions and ensure testing equipment is calibrated and maintained.
  • Maintain organised sample storage and development areas.
  • Liaise with suppliers, external laboratories and internal departments to obtain technical information and certifications.
  • Support continuous improvement activities and remain aware of developments in textile materials, testing and sustainability.
  • Comply with company Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures.

Measures of success

  • Testing completed accurately and within agreed timescales.
  • Effective support of new material trials, with results communicated clearly and on time.
  • Accurate and up-to-date documentation of all trials, tests, and developments.
  • Samples, archives and documentation remain organised and fully traceable.
  • Laboratory equipment maintained and calibrated.
  • Positive feedback from internal departments regarding communication, reliability and technical support.

Qualification

  • GCSE (or equivalent) in Math, English and Science.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • 1 year+ Experience in textiles
  • Basic understanding ofquality assurance, testing procedures, and supplier processes
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Ability to prioritise work and maintain accurate technical records.
  • Enthusiastic with a willingness to learn and develop.
  • Knowledge of textile printing, dyeing and finishing processes.
  • Experience supporting product development or manufacturing trials.
  • Understanding of textile standards and certifications including OEKO-TEX, REACH and GOTS.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems and technical documentation.
  • Methodical and well organised.
  • Curious with a passion for textiles and innovation.
  • Detail-oriented and quality focused.
  • Proactive with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Collaborative and able to build strong working relationships.
  • Adaptable and able to manage multiple priorities.
