We are seeking a technician to help with sample preparation and testing within our busy Geology and Geomaterials department.

The Geomaterials department comprises an enthusiastic team of Geologists and Materials Scientists whose principal work is in the analysis and failure investigation of construction materials of various types including concrete and natural stone. As part of this, it is necessary to prepare thin sections of rock, concrete and other construction materials for microscopic analysis. The department is seeking to appoint a technician focusing on preparation of samples for testing. This is a critical process requiring care and precision, that will require the successful candidate to cut, grind and polish samples to ready them for testing and analysis. This role provides the opportunity to work with and learn about a wide selection of natural and man-made construction materials. Additionally, the successful candidate will interact with experts from other departments within the firm. This is a full-time permanent position based in our laboratories in Clapham, London.

The Person

Ideally, you will have prior experience of thin section preparation, but it is not essential as we will provide training. However, good attention to detail is important, the quality of the prepared sample is critical to the subsequent investigation. The key requirements for the role are:

  • Prior experience in Geological / geomaterials thin section preparation
  • Training/education in Geology
  • Ability to learn new skills
  • Ability to operate machinery such as diamond saws, grinding and polishing machines (specific training given where necessary)
  • An interest in construction materials
  • Ability to arrange and organise own work to meet laboratory sample preparation instructions and schedules
  • Good IT skills
