About the Trainee Scheme
As a Trainee Assistant Engineer, you'll:
- Work closely with experienced professionals to support safe, sustainable development practices
- Gain experience across engineering and development areas including Health, Safety & Environment, Planning & Community Engagement, Pre-Development & Technical Design, and On-Site & Development Support
Hands-on experience includes:
- Identifying and helping mitigate risks in design
- Supporting CDM/EMS processes
- Assisting with submissions to water, highway and planning authorities
- Supporting community-focused planning and infrastructure
- Coordinating with external consultants and managing design documentation
- Interpreting surveys and technical reports
- Preparing working drawings for tenders and approvals
- Helping secure statutory approvals and manage consultant teams
- Visiting sites and helping resolve design or engineering issues
- Preparing and maintaining documentation for adoption, tracking, and NHBC requirements
- Collaborating with the production team to maintain engineering quality
The Programme:
The Trainee Programme is a structured development pathway lasting between two and four years, depending on your entry level and progression. It combines on-the-job experience with formal training to build the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to step into the Assistant Engineer role.
Throughout the programme, you will:
- Complete a two-year professional skills course at our dedicated Training Hub in Solihull.
- Follow a structured development plan with clear milestones for salary progression.
- Take part in regular reviews with your line manager to track progress and identify growth opportunities.
- Gain exposure to other departments across Taylor Wimpey.
- Join the Early Talent community as a programme ambassador, representing Taylor Wimpey at careers fairs and school events.
- Have the opportunity to apply for the Kings Trust Million Makers programme.
This blended approach ensures you gain real world experience while developing the technical, behavioural and leadership capabilities required to progress confidently within engineering.

- 2:1 degree in Civil Engineering
- A Full UK Driving License or an ability to get to remote site locations independently.
- Willingness to travel between sites and around your business unit area.
- You must have a Full Right to Work in the UK.
