Samuel Frank is recruiting an experienced Controls Engineer to join a well-established, growing South Yorkshire-based system integrator. This role suits someone who enjoys developing PLC software from scratch, writing high-quality technical documentation, and getting projects over the line through successful commissioning on customer sites. The Controls Engineer will join a highly skilled team delivering projects across process industries including utilities, manufacturing, chemicals, energy and nuclear. The company has an excellent reputation in the market and a strong pipeline of work for 2026 and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop PLC and SCADA software from scratch for a range of process control projects.
  • Involve throughout the full project lifecycle from initial design through to commissioning and handover.
  • Write detailed functional design specifications, test documentation and technical manuals.
  • Carry out on-site commissioning work across mainly regional customer sites.
  • Perform office-based software development and practical commissioning activity as part of varied, technically challenging projects.
  • Work collaboratively within a supportive engineering culture, solving problems and supporting teammates.
  • Adhere to a typical work split of 85% office-based and 15% on-site with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

  • Strong PLC programming experience, ideally with Siemens TIA Portal (though other PLC platforms will also be considered).
  • Previous experience working for a system integrator, OEM or process control related engineering business.
  • Background on process control, manufacturing, utilities, energy or similar industrial automation projects.
  • Hold a UK driving licence and full eligibility to work in the UK without sponsorship.

The role is commutable from Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Worksop and surrounding areas.
