This Control Systems Engineer role will suit someone who enjoys writing PLC software from scratch, producing structured documentation and delivering well-engineered automation projects from concept through to commissioning. The successful Control Systems Engineer will work on varied process automation projects across sectors including utilities, manufacturing, chemicals, energy and nuclear. This is not a maintenance role or a minor modifications role. The focus is on full lifecycle control systems engineering, software development and high-quality project delivery.
Key responsibilities:
- Writing PLC software from scratch for process control and industrial automation projects
- Developing SCADA systems and supporting HMI configuration
- Producing functional design specifications, software documentation, FAT documentation, test plans and technical manuals
- Working from URS / client requirements and translating them into robust control system solutions
- Involvement throughout the full project lifecycle from design through to commissioning and handover
- Working on regional control systems, telemetry and industrial automation projects
- Exposure to data analysis, reporting systems and integration with IT / database platforms
- Opportunity to work with MES platforms, industrial networking and OT infrastructure
- Working alongside experienced engineers on technically varied projects involving both operational technology and industrial IT systems
- Supporting projects involving functional safety and OT cyber security principles
- Joining a technically strong engineering team with a collaborative approach to software standards, documentation and project delivery
Approximate split is 85% office based and 15% site based with limited overnight stays.
Qualifications:
- Strong PLC software engineering experience using Siemens, Rockwell, Mitsubishi or Schneider or similar PLC platforms
- Experience with HMI and SCADA technologies
- Previous experience with industrial networking and industrial communication protocols
- Exposure to telemetry systems, OT systems or industrial IT integration projects would be advantageous
- Experience producing FDS, SDS, test plans, manuals or other structured engineering documentation
- Understanding of functional safety principles and industrial cyber security concepts would be beneficial
- Previous experience with a systems integrator, OEM, automation business or process control environment
- A background across process control, manufacturing, utilities, chemicals, energy or similar industrial sectors
- Full UK driving licence and eligibility to work in the UK without sponsorship
This role is commutable from Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield, Wakefield, Worksop, Huddersfield and surrounding areas.
