The Role
SAMS is a world‑leading marine science institute engaged in research, teaching and commercial ventures, and the post is to support its broad and interdisciplinary biogeochemistry analytical capabilities. The role is that of an analytical technical specialist providing laboratory analysis of inorganic seawater nutrients using continuous and bubble segmented flow analysis, and also preparing water, sediment and biological samples for a range of analyses such as CN elemental analysis, ICPMS/MS, dissolved gases, HPLC, IC and GC. The applicant will disseminate data to SAMS scientists, compile synthesis of analytical quality (including working to UKAS ISO management systems), contribute to publications and write metadata documentation. Responsibilities also include upkeep, performance and management of analytical instrumentation, essential oversight of a multi‑functional laboratory space, and maintaining and improving high standards of laboratory safety and sustainability. The role integrates teaching; the holder will demonstrate analytical skills to students and other staff and contribute to undergraduate practical teaching sessions, and will also participate in deep sea scientific expeditions, contributing directly to hydrographic surveys and coastal field work on small boats.
Our Ideal Candidate
A candidate should hold an MSc and/or PhD in an appropriate discipline and demonstrate a working knowledge of research methods and techniques. The position requires a minimum of three years of analytical experience in an environmental and preferably aquatic science discipline, with proven ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot and fix environmental analytical laboratory equipment independently, and to critique and improve analytical and research methods. Experience with data processing is essential, and knowledge of segmented or continuous flow analysis and other analytical platforms such as CN elemental analysis, ICPMS, HPLC, IC, GC and FTIR is highly desirable. Experience working with students and laboratory management is welcomed.
Employee Benefits
Benefits include flexible and hybrid working options, purchase of additional annual leave, shopping discounts, Cycle 2 Work scheme, purchases of technology and salary sacrifice, Payroll Giving, Pensions Plus, access to portals supporting health and wellbeing, a sabbatical scheme, free car parking with electric charging points, and a range of training and development courses. SAMS promotes an inclusive culture and supports employees' work and lifestyle through a variety of benefits year‑round.
